will do exercises such as weighted lunges and sumo squats with a moderate weight combined with some pnf stretching allow you to progress toward middle/forward split faster?

after reviewing a video on the weighted pike,i wondered if weights can improve flexibility in other movements in the same fashion.

YES.

 

And no. Higher rep olympic style squats with wide stance and deep lunges will help your overall hip mobility so much it feels like cheating. However, not all movements or positions are safe with added weight. The weighted pike stretch and the deep wide squats are safe, but you would have to look at each stretch you wanted to load and analyze it carefully to be safe.
