Bump on left wrist?

I've been trying to get better at tuck planches, but my wrists always hurt alot. It's mostley my left wrist though.

When I bend my left wrist down, I see a big bump on it, its been like that for a long time. Could it be a cyst? :(

Should I be buying wrist supports?

Does doing back of the hand push ups help that sort of thing or make it worse?

Sorry for all the questions.

Here there mate. Does the lump look something like this:

Human_wrist.png

If so that is totally normal, that is apart of the wrist joint ^^. If not, then I do not know what it could be. About wrist supports, I believe there was a post somewhere about them, but I think most of the members suggest not using them, as it doesn't really solve the problem of bad wrists, only use them when you really really have to.

Check out the Wrist Conditioning essay written by Coach Sommer. It should help you with your wrist troubles!

Search around on the forum too, there are alot of posts about wrists!

Peace,

Mike

I think I know what you mean. Is it in the middle on top of the wrist? I used to have one, most noticeable when the wrist was flexed as if you were trying to put your palm to your arm?

If that sounds about right you may have a ganglion cyst. They are normally caused by repetitive motion injuries, I got mine from excessive online gaming.

There are some pretty crued cures for ganglion cysts, mine was ruptured(a good thing in this case) from a snow boarding fall. I've heard of people dropping books onto them which can also cause them to rupture. It will hurt pretty bad for a while but eventually get better.

I wouldn't advise taking any action similar to those stated above unless you have talked to a doctor about it. Actually, if you do talk to a doctor about it he will have alternatives to those stated above. :D Much less barbaric methods.

What you're saying is exactly what it looks like. once the cycst is gone is there anything I can do to make it not come back? I heard they come back alot of times.

I don't know if this applies to all cases but mine was, like I stated before, caused by repetitive motion. Too much computer time. Since it has gone away I started using my left hand on the mouse instead of right. I also stopped playing games online as much. Recently I did start playing a new game and I used my right hand for it. The cyst came back. I stopped playing the game about a week ago and I can already tell a difference.

But, your situation could be different from mine.

Hope this helps.

Happened to me as well, stiffs up and such when you work on it such as handstands and computers, I happen to do both a lot.

One day actually this may sound weird, I think it "popped" or split open and from there it has been pretty normal, I was doing shoulder push ups and it popped or something and viola.

If yours is painful like mine was, I think it has something to do with swelling around the tendon and it applies pressure.

Thanks for the replies.

So you guys think I should continue doing all my wrist push ups, planches and handstands and stuff like that?

It sounds like it comes back most of the time, I might just have to live with it.

I have actually found that when treated correctly they will go away. In reality they might still exist but are unnoticeable.

This is what I have found works for me;

1. Since I am right handed I normally use my right hand on the mouse, switching that around, I now use my left hand on the mouse

2. Give it some rest, go easy on anything that is hard on your wrists for a couple of days

3. When some of the pain is alleviated by rest(this doesn't make sense but it seems to work for me), do a few sets of 30s wall handstands, stomach to the wall, hands as close to the wall as is comfortable(it really won't be comfortable, in fact it probably will hurt. However after I do this, when I come down from the handstand within a few minutes my wrist stops hurting as much)

I have a couple of questions for you though, are you right or left handed? Do you browse the web or use the computer for execissive periods of time?

Pop that sucker. I slammed the ganglion against the edge of a wooden gym rail in the gym years back. Pushing it in never amounted to anything. It's just fluid buildup and most docs are useless. My friend's dad a Senior Nurse told me to just pop it but wasn't going to help me years back.

It's never come back. I hear people use the book method but the left hand ain't super accurate and I could apply a lot more force. I'm sure I swore under my breath as well.

No I'm right handed, maybe I got the cyst from falling on my hands too many time when I used to skateboard.

Blairbob, when you slammed your wrist did you bend your hand so the bump was sticking out?

And did the nurse mean you're wrist won't feel good when you're older if you slam it??

My friend's dad, the nurse told me to just pop it but didn't tell me how and was pretty useless. It's just about the same thing they will tell you at the doc's. Sometimes they will go away over time but it was really annoying me at the time as it was on the underside of the wrist.

You can get them from falling on your wrist.

With ganglions, sometimes they reoccur at the same place later on but I've never had to deal with it again.

As the ganglion was on the underside of my wrist, I didn't have to flex my wrist really to expose it. It would help put pressure on it so it would pop easier.

Thanks for the information.

I watched a video on how to pop it with a book, It looks pretty easy to pop.

I think I'll go to the docter first just in case it's a different kind of cyst. It wouldn't be good to pop cancer, lol.

I'm pretty sure it's ganglion though.

I get ganglion cysts on my right wrist all the time. I just wait for them to go away and hope they don't come back soon.

While it most likely IS a ganglion that you can pop, I wouldn't self-diagnose and go banging it into things before you get a specialist to look at it, just in case it's actually one of these:

http://orthopedics.about.com/od/handwrist/g/bossing.htm (carpal boss)

And no, a nurse/GP won't do - mine thought it was a ganglion.

Take care

Thank you for the information. I don't think the bump is bone because it can move around.

I'm still not gonna do anything about it until I see my Dr. Tuesday.

I've started to notice that straight arm frogstands aren't hurting my wrist as much as they used to, so that's good. :D

I went the Dr. He said it looks like ganglia, and I could have them suck the juice out of it with a needle or they could extract it.

He said I should probably just leave it alone unless it hurts a lot more or my hands get numb.

I hate needles and I'll be damned if I'm gonna have to go through surgery for something so trivial. It requires me kicking and screaming before you take me near a hospital.

Yea, I asked him about smashing it with a book and he said, "I wouldn't." He said it could pop on its own though.

It was really bugging me when I was doing back of the hand push-ups too. I was tired of it so I slammed a heavy book on it four times... nothing happend, maybe I have something different. :(

I have a ganglion on my right wrist. I remember when I got it too. One day, near the end of my workout, I was doing muscleups and my wrist slipped. Didn't hurt very much but I noticed a pop when it happened. Couple weeks later I noticed the ganglion.

I pop it every once in a while, when the fluid builds too much. When you get surgery on it there is a 90% chance of it not coming back. I don't feel like going to get my wrist cut open though.
