mattdaly
I'm out of training for about 4 weeks due to grade 1 ac joint injury (fell on shoulder due to slippery paving) so when I'm back to being able to workout again I was wondering what are people's take on mixing gymnastic body weight workouts with free weight workouts? Is there any benefit to the mix? Or is it better to just stick to body weight training only. I just want to make up for the total of 6 weeks of not being active and give myself a quicker time to be back to strength & fitness levels I was before injury. I was actually thinking of free weights morn and gymnastic workouts in evening. My cardio is soccer training on thurs and game day on sat. Would love people's thoughts. Philip Chubb
I am sure you'll get a lot of different answers from the one I am about to give but in my opinion, mixing gymnastic exercise and free weights isn't the best use of your time. When I say this, I am assuming you mean gymnastic exercises and upper body weight lifting. I believe it taxes recovery that could be used for more vital exercises. Gymnastic body upper body work will already have a good amount of transfer. Why bother lowering recovery with something inferior? Second, take note that if someone tells you otherwise, consider how strong they are. How many real planches do you see? Or one arm chins? Now if you mean gymnastic upper body work and weighted lower body work, I agree. That is a good choice of action if you aren't afraid of a little lower body hypertrophy. If you aren't living on a spring floor, you need to be able to use your own legs as springs.
mattdaly
thanks alex for your advice it seems very sound to me, I thought bout free weights only because I feel I need to start at the beginning all over again due to my injury so I have been soley doing gymanstic training for last 4 months and before that free weights and I don't think that I will be doingany upper body workouts for at least a month, and at almost 37 I need to realise it takes me longer to recover these days At moment to keep as fit as I can I have been doing tonnes of body weight squats and hr long walks with an overactive border collie!
