Guest jumpupandfly
Hey yall, I was wondering if any of you had experience or ideas relating to this pain Ive been having in my wrist. Its on the top side of my hand near the wrist joint. Its right around the base of the bones leading to the index and middle fingers. Its a fairly sharp pain, and it doesnt come unless I flex or extent the wrist too far. Also, I can't support handstands without pain. Now, a little background - I have been working out for a couple months without problem and I have been doing handstands off and on for years. I have been doing frog stands and handstands, and I guess that would put some stress on the joint but I those haven't bothered me at all up until now. A couple days ago I started doing some back handsprings, and I did 5-6 the first day, same thing the next day. I was doing them on a mat and they felt fine on the wrists, so I don't know if that was the cause of the problem. There is nothing I have been doing that I can remember aggravating the joint at the time, it just started on its own one night. Right now Im just resting it, and obviously trying not to do any movements that bother it. If any of you coaches out there have any suggestions on strengthening excersizes or stretches, Id appreciate it. Thanks
StevenJ
For the record I'm not a doctor, or a coach or anything but, from what you're describing it sounds like you have a similar condition to what I had a few weeks ago. Basically what I did was take a week with NO use of the wrist in exercises, then I started doing the exercises Coach Rx'd a while back for wrist pain. I'm sure if you look you will find them, but I don't want to sift at the moment. Do them every day and after another week see if your wrist doesn't feel better. That helped me tremendously and now I'm back doing handstands and frog-stands and false grips and all those lovely things.

Gittit Shwartz
jumpupandfly, I have had the same thing going for over a year. It's always the worst after handstands and planche progressions.I have a bone spur on the base of my wrists (called a carpal boss), which developed gradually over a couple of years. I don't know for sure if the growth was accelerated by doing a lot of handstands and planches or not enough wrist prep.I need to really warm up my wrists before doing handstands - I use Coach Sommer's exercises as well as manually, massage the hands with Traumeel (homeopathic lotion). I've switched to doing tuck planches with hands reversed (fingers pointing towards the feet rather than forward) and try not to push my wrists over 90 degrees I guess my bottom line is, get a hand specialist to look at your hand just in case.Coach, have you ever seen this phenomenon (carpal boss) with one of you athletes?
