Pull-chin ups: what should I do?

Hello you all!

I have a question about the execution of a good pull up and a chin up: when I'm going down in the pull up, should I extend completly my arms or contract them a bit?

Since I have memory, my thoughts about "doing a pull up" was to completly extend my arms, but it seems that I was wrong...
