competitive gymnast training

Just out of curiosity (and maybe seeking a little inspiration), what is the training routine of a competitive (especially rings specialist) gymnast like: how much time do they devote to doing what kinds of things? I know there are all levels of competition, and I'm especially interested in how olympians train (I assume this is the most intense). but I'd be interested in hearing if any of you all know of how other high level types train. thanks

Currently I am competing as a level 8 all-around.

My training has been more intense than most people(in relation to the time I've been competing).

I know that a lot of level 8+ guys will train much more than I do, but for the past year or so I have basically hit the ground running.

Now, I train 3-4 hours a day 5 days a week.

About 45 minutes of that training is dedicated to strength, flexibility and prehab.

Hope this helps. For your question about rings specialists at the olympic level, I think the closest you will get is Gregor.

If you have the time, I'd be interested especially in what your non-strength training looks like--If you could detail somehow what kinds of things you do--and how much toll it takes. I only have experience of Gymnastic Strength Training™, and I'm assuming what you do isn't fundamentally different from what we learn about here, but I'm interested in what all is involved in skill training. I've been involved in other sports, and I enjoyed studying the practices of the elite athletes, especially so as to admire their determination and work capacity.

My apologies if this is not an easy or clear question to answer.

If you can find the website for the gym Coach Sommer coaches at you can see the breakdown of how much each of his levels train.

A beginning gymnast here in the states will train say 5-8 hours a week. A junior elite gymnast will train about 25-30 hours per week, 6 days a week. I've heard of some junior elites training 40+ though at very young ages. This is usually 2 practices a day as well.

Most collegiate athletes are supposed to train under 25 hours/week if my memory is correct.

This is men's. Most junior female elites will be training 30+. Shawn Johnson was remarkable in that she only trains 1x per day but is around that number. Usually there is a short practice and long practice with roughly 6-8 hours in between.

It's hard to say how much how hard, more you go higher from lowest level to more advenced levels and at last to olympians, more specific from gymnast to gymnast is. And of course from country to country. I can tell you that Aljaž Pegans aproach is totaly diffrent to Mitja Petkovšeks aproach and all are one of the best in the world on their apparatus.

I have been training here in Shanghai China for the past few months and their system is extremely intense. For the kids that are competing and getting ready to compete, their schedule looks like this:

Mon - 2:30PM to 6:00PM

Tue - 8:30AM to 11:30AM and then 2:30PM to 6:00PM

Wed - 8:30AM to 11:30AM and then 2:30PM to 6:00PM

Thu - rest day but they come into the gym to play around from 2:30PM to 6:00PM

Fri - 8:30AM to 11:30AM and then 2:30PM to 6:00PM

Sat - 8:30AM to 12:00PM and then running for half hour in the afternoons

This is the schedule for the younger 15 to 17 year old kids that are preparing to compete. The older guys usually end early in morning and afternoon sessions. I will make a thread about all the things I have learned about the chinese system! Hope that gives some insight.
