Junkyard
My lowerback is pretty junky from so many powerlifting injuries, so pike stretches irritate it. Currently my primary hamstring stretch comes from right and left splits. Will this be enough I wonder?
Cole Dano
Well yes and no. A lot of the core work in GST requires some degree of pike flexibility as it's essentially active pike work. The good news there is that the pike progressions in Coach Sommer's courses start easy, and have a number of elements that can be therapeutic for a junky lower back. The key is to start slow, and work at your comfortable limit and not beyond. If doing splits work limbers you up then that fine, but you will want to work two leg stretching as well. It's just a matter of making it progressive. In general you'll want to start your pike work, by doing only variations that allow you to keep your back neutral, not rounded.
Sailor Venus
pop your leg on a window sill. keep the supporting leg straight. you can also lie on the floor, have one leg up and a partner to push that leg to your head while the other leg stay where it is.
