l-sit pull-ups, and chin-ups vs weighted

They are different. You change the leverage with the L sit versions and this does add difficulty, but will not completely replace weighted pull ups.

However, rope climbing is a reasonably good replacement.

If adding weight is your aim, Gaben, it seems like any safe and practical way you can do it is OK. Holding a DB between your legs does seem hard though.

I used dumbbells until I hit +100 lbs, because we didn't have anything heavier than that on the ship.

I will go ahead and tell you right now that it is a good idea to get a 1.5" thick climbing rope and use it.

Regarding the dumbell between the legs, if you wrap the bar portion with a towel it's helps for gripping.

Or, you can use the feet to grab it too.

Good tip I got from this forum. Get an old bicycle tube. Cut it so it's one length. Then wrap it around your feet and tie it into a circle (tightly). Take it off and then thread the weights onto the new loop, insert your feet on either side of the weight and you are away.
