Alexander Svensson
Something that I have been wondering about for quite a while is during warmup, is it bad for the neck to do circles?I have read that half-circles to the front are okay but half-circles backwards are a big no no, while I've read that some people think that circles are bad no matter how you perform them.I also wonder the same about circling your knees, is it okay or is it not? Cole Dano
Most of these cautions regarding things like neck or knee circles are aimed at untrained, weak or generally immobile individuals. In general there is nothing wrong with any of these movements as long as they don't hurt. If they do, reduce the ROM.With backward neck circles the issue is one of a stiff upper back. i often like to say the neck starts between the shoulder blades. When the thoracic spine is mobile, the neck will generally go fully back with ease.Still the back circles can be awkward, my own preference is just to do full circles, which I find easier on the neck.
