seiyafan
I am so n00bie when it comes to this but how come I don't hear gymnasts grunt during their ring routines in competitions?1. You are not allowed to by rules?2. It's a form of courtesy and professionalism?3. You are too strong there is no need to grunt?
Aaron Griffin
Probably #2 and #3 mostly. Could you imagine ballerinas grunting when doing their work?
seiyafan
So I guess it's not the same as olympic weightlifting.
Aaron Griffin
That's why they're different sports
Blairbob
Just never been done. And it sounds way dumb during Women's Tennis. The guys don't do it. It's probably also a matter of concentration, especially for the girl's with their dance choreography. It makes way more sense during StrongMan, Power or Olympic Weightlifting, or even CrossFit. I imagine they do it during Football, possibly wrestling and during Judo.
irongymnast
I've noticed that when gymnasts perform their routines seeming relaxed or making it seem effortless, the better are the comments.Take for example Chen Yibing that demonstrates brutal strength during his very hard routines on the rings and yet he makes it seem effortless, with little rocking, very solid holds and smooth transitions. On the other hand Brandon Wynn has a very struggling face during his routines and I remember a commentator saying that this his biggest complaint with his routines. Note that this comment was before him starting that routine so he's associated that athlete with something considered bad such as struggling face. He was saying that "he needs to learn how to have a more relaxed face". I think that at least subliminally, that has a negative effect on his routine grading. Also I feel that the more elegant the sport, the more effortless/aerial the moves/routines have to be. Ballet is close with gymnastics at that and on the opposite side are strongman/olympic weightlifting.Personally, I grunt a lot on the rings lol. Ryan Hutchins
Grunting doesn't help me on the rings. To hold yourself in a static position i believe it best to maintain a neutral breath hold. As in shallow breaths. IMO of course 8) Holding those positions back to back to back and then pressing out of any held skill requires a strange detachment and calm. as far as the technical and judging aspects of the sport... The FIG manual states that no skill should be performed that the athelete doesn't have mastered.
