Longshanks
I'm just curious, if you couldn't get to a pull-up bar would manna training be a good substitute? It works your upper back, triceps, hips and abdominal core doesn't it? I'm planning on going traveling at some point in the near future and taking a pull-up bar with me would really put the weight of my ruck-sack up. I'm only on the easiest straight leg L-sit variation at the moment and was planning on trying to wait til I can get the hips forward variation of L-sit before starting manna training. Does that sound sensible?
iyaites
I say its ok. It works the muscles, so your Front Lever strength is not going to deterioriate too much.
Amebix138
You wont have access to parks or tree branches (where you can hang your rings or just do them on the branch)?
braindx
Manna should replace nothing. It should be paired with handstands and/or handstand variations.Planche should be paired with back lever and/or front lever.
AlexX
Hm maybe I am wrong but to me it seems that manna has more in common with pressing then with pulling which is what a front lever is. Even if I was wrong and manna was a pulling exercise I imagine the carryover would have been minimal at best, different joint angle and position altogether no matter how you look at it. Joshua Naterman
Did my post get deleted or something? No matter where you go for work, you're going to have a door frame you can work on somewhere, or a bus stop, or something else. If you're going to be out in the wilderness, either take a pull up bar or use a tree branch/walking stick/ short wooden dowel from home depot. You can just tie a rope to the middle and then to a branch, or you can actually use tree branches. Or bring your rings and loop them over stuff. Don't punk out!I do lever work at college most days in my classroom doorframe after class is out. Sure, some people wonder wtf I am doing, but I don't care! I don't get in trouble, and that's all that matters. If that becomes an issue I'll work out at the smoker's shelter, but there hasn't been one complaint. People seem to think it's cool. Plus, the finger work is good for ya! If you can do it lol If, somehow, there really is just no way for you to do pulling work, you're just going to be behind when you get back. No way around it. I suggest you get creative, personally! I've only been to a few places where it would even be a challenge to find a place to do pulling work. What kind of traveling are you planning on doing? Longshanks
I'm planning on doing a year out at all the best places for my martial arts, particularly Brazil, Thailand, Philippines and I've heard LA has some great places like the Inosanto academy. Most gyms do have pull-up bars but since I'm going with my girlfriend not all the places we go will be fighting oriented and probably more touristy so not likely to have em. Guess I can't really compromise on this one. I do have an iron gym pull-up bar which is portable and ideal, just big and not ideal weight wise. I want to take my rings and was trying to work out a way to attach them to door frames without the bar. Slizzardman, your quite creative with DIY any ideas? I've been thinking of 2 C-clamps but somehow modified so they don't damage the door frame. Mind you I think they would probably be heavier then the pull-up bar itself which is hollow. Maybe this idea is a lost cause.
