Jennifer Keeney
Hi Guys, I've been doing all 3 stretch courses weekly for the past 6 weeks (love them!). I have hypermobile elbows and I feel like I read somewhere on this forum that it is okay to lock them out. For the past couple of years I had made an effort to keep a slight bend in the elbow joint because my physical therapist told me I should to prevent injury for people with hyper mobile elbows. (Note that I was seeing my PT for a shoulder injury - my elbows have always been fine). However, during the first couple of exercises during the Thoracic Bridge series, especially the Rocking Bridge my elbows feel a bit stressed - especially immediately after I stop I have to shake my arms out. Last week one elbow was sore the next day but then felt fine. I was just wondering if anyone thinks this is just my elbow tendons adapting to being used properly? Or should I back off a bit? Thanks,Jen
Itamann Itaman
I got this hyperextended arms too and am doing the 3 stretch courses since they've came out.At the beginning it feels a little bit stressed too but now it is better, I think you should keep doing these and it will be fine. Mikkel Ravn
I don't have hypermobile elbows, but would also get them 'stressed occasionally when training F1/H1. As a rule, I would suggest letting the elbows calm down before thraining the same movement again. If it is a mild stress, 48 hours should do the trick, and thus not interfere with the training at all. If you need to rest longer to get rid of the soreness, so be it. Christian Nogueira
I have very hypermobile elbows (I can gross some people out when I extend my arms overhead) and never had an issue with lockout. However the Table rocks and shoulder extension exercises in the Thoracic Bridge Stretch Series do put some discomfort in the elbows so manage them gradually, especially if you have tight biceps (I'd find that this advice applies even you have normal elbows). Slow down the tempo a bit when doing table rocks and be conservative in the shoulder extensions stretches.
Mark Collins
I work as a physiotherapist and can see no problem with you fully extending your elbows. As you have lived with elbows like this you would put them through this range many times a day without realising it. Now you have increased the load with new exercises you are more aware of the elbows. Take it gradual and led the body adapt. F1 is full of exercises that prepare the elbows and is great for hypermobile people.
