Ring Curvature : Necessary ?

Hi,

I was just about to make a Poorman's ring. I was wondering if there is any significant difference in not bending the pieces of PVC but instead passing a rope through it so that it is pretty much like a ring except for a curvature ( like the historical ones ? first image at http://www128.pair.com/r3d4k7/Climbing&Gymnastics2.0.html )

I was wondering if there is any significant difference between the two types.

Hope this is not a very dumb question.

Before I got my rings in the mail, I made up some like these. They are ok but sometimes one end or the other will slide forward or backward. I don't think I had much success with the false grip transition to muscle-up but try it out again.

They work ok, but I prefer a circle.

i used to work on a pullup bar exclusively before getting my rings - and as all the reading about false grip made me curious, i tried to grip the rail with a false grip and put some pressure on it... didnt feel nice at all. the curvature of the rings definitely helps with the false grip and i dint know how much id trust the stability of straight pvc pieces for supports and dips.

but for back and front lever, id say they might be a good solution. better than a pullup bar, i guess, as you can rotate your wrists freely.
