Fluidity
I just want to ask a quick question, when implementing sprinting into foundation work, should I do it before or after foundation work? Or would it be better to do it during days when I'm off from foundation work?
David McManamon
A broad question is difficult to answer accurately without knowledge of your background and specific goals. The answer depends a lot on your work capacity and primary goal(s). High intensity work is great for teaching your body how to get stronger so you will be doing both high intensity upper body, lower body and cardio work. That is a very demanding routine so I would start with training each a minimum of 3x per week and increasing as you feel able. If you are training both in the same day why not mix them if you want to give each equal weight?
FREDERIC DUPONT
Definitely after foundation Make sure your lower body is thoroughly warmed up though.
Joshua Naterman
I tend to agree with Fred, but if it isn't a leg day maybe it won't matter much for you.
Hernandez C
Agree with after workout too, besides, in my experience, some not too hardcore sprinting is always a cool finisher, i dunno its maybe the increased blood flow
Peter Sbirakos
I've looked at that question in some detail, and actually asked the same question to Coach Chris at the Canberra Seminar. Most experts agree (including Coach) that running (jogging and/or sprinting) should be done before F1 training. There are also research papers that support that running before strength style training. Search PubMed etc.I would hazard a guess that most people on these forums are not elite or even at the professional level. So who cares, really? I'm not at the elite level even though I was once many, many years ago but now, I don't worry about it. I've run both before and after strength training and I must admit, I feel better running after F1. Just know that sprinting helps to maximise VO2 and running (say long distance) helps to improve VO2. Just do what feels right for you.Working in professional sport, the Australian Rugby League and its definitely the worlds toughest league, the athletes train multiple sessions per day and sometimes they either sprint before weights and sometimes after. Even at that level sports science doesn't worry about it.
FREDERIC DUPONT
Hummm, I am very surprised Peter... Thanks for sharing this though.
Peter Sbirakos
Sprinting before or after is not a deal breaker. Maybe it is if you are trying to shave off a 100th of a second and attempting a world record sprint. But then again, your priority wouldn't be gymnastics now would it?
