Joshua Slocum
On days that I work ring strength I generally will work out for ~45 minutes and then stretch for 15-30. Ideally should I drink a protein shake immediately after the strength training or wait until done with stretching too? My intuition is that muscular recovery would begin pretty much as soon as I stop exerting them, so if I spend 20 minutes stretching that's 20 minutes of catabolism. So a shake would then be best immediately after conditioning. But I'm not sure so it'd be nice to hear from someone with more experience.
Larry Roseman
Studies have shown it's actually more effective if you have had eaten something at least an hour before your workout. Something with slow carbs and protein. That way it's already in your bloodstream when building operations resume. During a workout digestion doesn't really happen, and after workout the muscles stay in a catabolic state for couple hours anyway, as the body needs to clear the micro-damage. Pretty much if you eat something within an hour following workout it will be there when rebulding resumes. The timing isn't as critical as sending a rover to mars for example . Sometimes I'll stretch first other times grab a bar, depending on how hungry I am.
Blairbob
My thoughts are the same nowadays. Lets say you eat 2hrs before you workout...well lets say you eat 40g of protein. That might like 8hrs to fully leach all the amino acids you're gonna get. Maybe 4. Hard to say as I havent see values of protein/hour for meats just milk/egg/protein powder. Then you hit some whey protein. 20-30g. That will do you for 2-3hours. If you workout is 2, your body still good for about an hour.
