Workout Music

After a quick search I was surprised to find this hasn't really been covered here before. Personally I'm not yet at the stage of following the WODs as I'm rehabbing but I still need a little extra motivation to get on with it some times and the right music can make a big difference.

The run2rhythm site has some good information on the role of music in sports:

For a piece of music to truly inspire the listener, it must have strong rhythmic qualities that match the activity at hand and also a tempo which matches the predicted heart rate. The melody and harmony of the music should promote a positive mood state; that is, they should energize the listener and increase vigor. The music should also stem from the listener's socio-cultural background and comply with their preferences. Finally, it is ideal that for the music to be associated with physical activity either through the lyrics, e.g., Work Your Body!, or its association with other media such as film or TV. A classic example of such a track would be Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger", which was a theme from the Rocky series.

...the rhythmical qualities of music also emulate patterns of physical skills; therefore, music can enhance the acquisition of motor skills and create a better learning environment. There is evidence from both gymnastics and swimming in support of this (Chen, 1985; Jernberg, 1981).

Personally I like Hip Hop. It certainly has the "strong rhythmic qualities" but I have to admit it might not strictly stem from my "socio-cultural background" I don't tend to go for music associated with physical activity through the lyrics as I find it a little too cheesey! But there's no arguing with "Eye of the Tiger"!

Some of my "go-to" tracks are:

Nas - One Mic remix with Ennio Morricone

Mylo - Drop the Pressure

OR, if I'm in the mood for something on the cheesier side:

La Roux - Bulletproof

What are your recommendations?

Maybe we can compile an ultimate Gymnastic Bodies playlist!

I prefer to not listen to music chix would listen to. You can only imagine the utter shite I have to bear with every night at UC Berkeley's college club. It reeks of estrogen.

Quite honestly, considering what I usually have to listen to, it's kind of nice to have empty bare silence. I let our girls use their Ipod but we have a no Justin Bieber clause.

When I coach MAG, a steady diet of Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZTop, ManofWar, Metallica, CreedenceClearwater, Pink Floyd, Van Halen, Scorpions, Ozzy Osbourne (one of my favorite team girls loves him though she is a crazy lil redhead), Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lewis, most machismo guy movie music is only acceptable.

Country is never though Johnny Cash is not considered country, it's considered AWESOME and beyond words.

My boys really liked to either warm up to music from Transformers, "the Final Countdown" by Europe or...

oomCIXGzsR0

I like any of Basil Poledouris or Harry Gregson Williams theme music.

Erik Sjolin

Wow, Pink Floyd? Don't get me wrong, they're one of my favourite groups, but it's usually pretty mellow stuff.

Pennywise, Metallica, Deadmau5, and The Who are go-to's for me, but if I ever do use music, I just turn on a radio to my favourite station and crank it!

Quick Start Test Smith

I dislike listening to music while I train. It always seems as if I am trying to work myself up, and that always makes me feel as if it's a bit artificial. I do LOVE listening to education tapes while training. I've listened to tapes about finances, Pete Sampras, public speaking, Spanish, and the Universe in a Nutshell already (as well as a few other things). I just got about 3 more tapes about how the brain works, how thought is created, and about something else I can't remember lol. I get my MP3 player tomorrow, and I've already downloaded a few hours worth of lectures on various subjects. It's great! :D

no Justin Bieber clause.

Goes without saying really but this also applies to the Ultimate GB Playlist!

Johnny Cash is not considered country, it's considered AWESOME and beyond words.

True. But which of his songs would make our playlist? Maybe "God's Gonna Cut You Down"?

Must admit I hadn't heard of Two Steps From Hell. I just checked them out. It is all very er... EPIC isn't it. I liked it more than I thought I would just going by the name.

So far we have something like this:

Track 1 - Survivor "Eye Of The Tiger" (obviously)

Track 2 - Something by Two Steps From Hell (don't know which tune, one of the EPIC ones)

Track 3 - Some Metal (I know nothing about Metal so someone will have to get specific)

Track 4 - Some silence

Track 5 - A lecture on Cognition by Pete Sampras

Track 6 - Johnny Cash "God's Gonna Cut You Down" (Unless anyone has a better suggestion)

Track 7 - Joe Esposito "You're The Best"

It's looking good so far but I'll be honest, it might need some more work.

Keep the suggestions coming!

I dislike radio because of commercials.

The Ramones can work.

Except Pink Floyd is awesome and good for boys like Blue Oyster Cult, etc.

"Folsom Prison Blues" by JohnnyCash.

I normally like to workout in science, but I do like to listen to some stories on tape. That way I get my mind into epic stories, and tales of terrible tragedy, etc... Instead of focusing on how hard the stuff I am doing is!

I generally don't like most heavy metal rock/rap/annoying music (as I call it) it just makes my brain feel cramped and really hurts my ability to workout (There are some exceptions to this rule)

Other than that I surprisingly like to listen to some super sad music, Such as anything by vienna teng, Lisa Kelly, Adele this sad violin playlist

And other stuff like that. Or when I am in a happy music mood I listen to stuff like, Anything and everything by owl city! Switchfoot (They are awesome) And when I am in an occasionally rocky mood skillet.

Quite honestly, considering what I usually have to listen to, it's kind of nice to have empty bare silence. I let our girls use their Ipod but we have a no Justin Bieber clause.
Good man!

Yes, Guile's Theme FTW! There's a heavy techno version that I had years ago and can't find anymore and that makes me sad. If anyone uncovers something like that for God's sake PLEASE link me to it or hook it up!

I also love the FF7 battle music from The Black Mages. They do rock/metal versions of lots of FF music and it is seriously incredible. Between that, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes punk rock covers of practically every great song ever (they are seriously a cover band on par with Social Distortion in their own way), Guile's Theme, select songs from Ride the Lightning, Dookie, Eye of the Tiger, Rock the Dragon (go ahead and hate, I still LOVE IT!!!), other songs in that vein (a bit of Rammstein comes to mind, and In Extremo) and some old school Dre, ODB, Outkast, etc I'm good to go!

Sadly no :( Thanks for taking the time to search around a bit!

On a completely unrelated topic, don't ever EVER EVER listen to Melt Banana. They will leave scars on your soul.
