Cole Dano
I've never heard this from anyone but Mercola, who's opinions are admittedly somewhat suspect.Does anyone think there is any merit to this?Whey Protein Isolates have Dangerous Forms of ProteinAll whey protein isolates are devoid of nutritional co-factors including alkalizing minerals, naturally occurring vitamins, and lipids, which are lost in the processing... This renders them deficient and overly acidifying. Unlike whole protein food concentrates which does not acidify your body due to it's alkalinizing minerals, whey protein isolate are over acidifying. Whey isolate can be a serious liability. If chronically consumed in large amounts (such as with bodybuilders or athletes) without alkalizing foods, it can acidify your body and over time may lead to metabolic acidosis with consequences that include waste of muscle and bone tissues, total metabolic shut down, and increased vulnerability to degenerative disease. Many cheap whey protein isolates are produced from acid cheese; they're byproducts of acid processing, which is a cheap way to separate whey from the curd. Most of these whey products are rated below pet foods because of the inferior quality of the protein, which is actually more of a nitrogen waste product than one that will produce health benefits that are mentioned in the featured study.Additionally once the fat has been removed from whey protein isolate, you lose some of the most important components of its immunological properties, such as phospholipids, phosphatidylserine and CLA. All of the IgG immunoglobulins, which are an excellent source of glutamine and glutamylcysteine, are also bound to the fat globule, and therefore lost in the processing of whey isolates. So the bottom line is that if you want to use whey protein, PLEASE do not use an inferior whey isolate as there is no doubt in my mind it will cause more damage to you than benefit. Razz
Ido always recommends concentrates instead of isolates. So does Poliquin in general.
Quick Start Test Smith
 OH NO... I thought isolates were preferable over concentrates! I just ordered five pounds of whey isolate. Confound it! Ah, well. I guess it won't kill me. I'll buy concentrate next time... that's VERY good to know. No wonder BlairBob responded to my protein powder question with an alternative to isolate... At least the concentrate is a few dollars cheaper than the isolate.
RatioFitness
Does the Mercola article contain references?

I don't know if what dr Mercola says is right or wrong, but at least the article says that if you add alkalizing food, you should be ok. At least, five pounds is not chronically consumption.I've never used isolates because they're expensive and attack the inner parts of the wallet. Joshua Naterman
Guys, stop freaking out.Proteins in GENERAL are acidifying but that's why you're supposed to eat vegetables! Just eat your veggies, take a good multi vitamin that has all cofactor forms and chelated minerals (poliquin and Johnny Bowden both have good ones for reasonable prices, really) and stop worrying. It doesn't matter whether it is whey or meat or eyeball protein. If it's protein, it's somewhat acidifying. Don't freak out, just have a serving of raisins or something. Pretty much all plant matter is alkalyzing with the exception of cereal grains. Just eat lots of greens and fruit, especially dried fruit for some reason that I don't completely understand, and you're fine no matter what. Blairbob
the body has a pretty good way of managing acid and alkalinity, it's called breathing. I like mercola but sometimes he's out there

I eat tons of vegetables!deodatus - well, I'm glad to know anyway! Next time I make an order, I can get eight pounds for the previous price of five! Can't complain about that. I'm also going to get a bit of BCAA and creatine monohydrate.
