jamesters
I recently started doing private lessons with someone. She says I'm ready for front flip dive rolls and double fronts, but I'm scared. Is there anyway to progress into this without just getting the guts and going for it?Right now I've been working front flip to stomach on stacked mats. The gym has a belt over the floor and a belt over a trampoline, also there's a tumble trak, if that info helps with drill ideas. Blairbob
front flip to stacked mats. front flip tuck open to straight body and land. this type of tuck will be with the knees and hips around 90 degrees.
jamesters
Which do you think is better to learn first, front flip dive roll or double fronts? Also, when you go for the dive, do you try to spot the ground when you put the hands out, or is it pretty much done blind? Blairbob
Dunno, never worked the Front Flip roll out but worked doubles into pit. I would work doubles into the pit or harness coupled with flipping to stacked mats high and working the front tuck open.
Seiji
Hey blair, I'm going to a gym on friday and I'm going to try this skill. My front tucks are front flip tuck open to straight body and land. this type of tuck will be with the knees and hips around 90 degrees. just like that.I usually open around parallel with a loose tuck. Should I try to learn this from a jog or out of a front handspring? I'll try both, but I was just curious how coaches normally teach it.
Blairbob
Both. Some gymnasts don't use the front handspring much and will just run and hurdle into a salto series with twists. Or they will alter their front flip/salto into a front whip to accelerate their front series (which will lead into twists to and from back saltos). In L6, the boys are required to run, hurdle and punch front in a front tumbling pass. The girls will often do something similar and connect another front salto in L8. Razz
I did 1 3/4 before I did doubles, but I actually find the doubles much less scary. Just do as Blair said, front flip and then open to land on your back in the second flip, once that's easy just go for 2 flips..
Seiji
I forgot mats existed at the gym today... I was too excited to think about trying any of the planned things. Front tucks are insanely easy on plyo to me. I kick out about 45 degrees from perpendicular and with a very loose tuck. I have no reason to be scared of falling, that floor doesn't hurt to fall on at all.WOW, I love gymnastics. I think I'll take classes. Although martial arts is huge, this is just way too much fun for me to pass up. Plus, gymnastics conditioning is better than regular martial arts conditioning. Floor is fun, trampoline is fun, foam pit is fun... I tried to use the high bar, but couldn't kip That was fun, even though I couldn't do anything.I'm really glad I know you guys. You've made my life even more enjoyable.
Blairbob
Most MA conditioning turns into more GPP and endurance. As in how many pushups, situps, and squats you can do. We were lucky enough to have a rope though most didn't use it. We did a lot of situp variants besides lying leg lifts and holds, L-sits and as I said sets of pushups in 10's. Somewhere around 10-30, I think.
