Vitamin D is complex. Unfortunately not all the science is in on vitamin D yet. We know deficiency is bad and that half the population is likely deficient. There are some concerns that too much vitamin D may lead to vascular calcification and atherosclerosis. So I would temper Jeff's enthusiastic and non-committal answer with a note of caution. Up to 10,000 iu daily has been shown to be safe in multiple studies, and blood levels of 30-100 have been proposed as normal. However, there is growing concern that the upper limit of this may be harmful from a vascular standpoint, which is why the current guidelines (conservative as it is, suggests not supplementing for above 30). Many will say this is too low and I agree with them, but it is important to know why there are concerns about taking too much. First do no harm...
