Front tuck help

Hey guys,

I'm focussing on improving my front flips, so recorded a few of them (sorry I can't post them from my phone). I noticed I don't block for the jump as much as I should so I'll be working on that.

I also noticed that my tuck is very weak. Are there any drills or exercises I can do to help me tuck harder for a faster rotation? Or is it a case of just keep trying to tuck harder.

Impossible to help without video.  The problem with the "jump" is actually called the set.  Most likely you aren't setting yourself up and are instead setting forward and flipping straight from the ground.  Front rolls on the ground of the best way to practice the tuck.  The front tuck only requires modest strength to tuck into.

I recorded a few attempts yesterday, sorry for the delay in putting them up, i'm not great with technology! (I also don't know how to embed videos in the post rather than just the link, is this possible?)

 

It seems like I need to get more height and rotate faster, I'm landing really low with bent knees and it kind of jolts my lower back a little from the impact

It's a few attempts at front flips from a couple days ago, I'll be recording more in the coming days and (hopefully) improving the technique a bit.

 

Any tips on how I can get more height and tuck harder (or generally fix whatever I'm doing wrong) would be really appreciated, thanks very much!

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eNAe3okMud0 this is from my mobile so might not work if not search Dogen Blocking Tutorial on youtube. It covers how to get height on a front flip. I'm not as expert as some on here but you don't seem to be jumping up you're relying purely on rotating fast to get over.

It's natural as you want to make sure you get over and don't land on your head but ideally you should go up and then tuck completing the rotation at the top and land with nearly straight legs. Takes a lot of practice to go UP and get over the fear of not making it around. As well as how tight you can tuck there is also how fast you can tuck this also speeds the rotation. Find somewhere as soft as possible to practice and good luck!

To clarify the video slightly as it didn't explicitly state how blocking works. An ideal block would have your feet out in front of you by an amount such that by the time you left the floor your body would have caught up with and be directly above your feet. So the faster you are travelling horizontally the more in front of you can afford to place your feet.

The reason you want your body directly above your feet as you leave the ground is so as much of your horizontal momentum as possible goes to vertical height and so drives you up rather than along. The block with your feet also gives you rotation; your feet stop as you place them on the ground but your body keeps travelling forward. So blocking done properly gives you height and rotation which is exactly what you are looking for. Your feet should really be the furthest thing forward as you block in some of your flips you were bent over so your head and feet were equally far forward. This tends to drive you forward more than up. Hope that helps it's sometimes hard to describe these kinds of things in print.
