Oh my god, thank you for posting this! My Physical Education teacher was boasting about crossfit and how 'progressive' it is by making each workout harder, and I was trying to remember the name of the article and the condition it can cause so I could retaliate  :icon_twisted: . I'll be sure to show her this, she'd be interested!

Cheers  Keilani  B-)

Any sport is risky. I have seen plenty of people collapse running long distance races, but it rarely gets reported on.

Rhabdo happens more than people probably realize in endurance athletes. That article uses an extreme version of it with an ridiculously high CK level. The article reports the definition and pathophysiology of rhabdo well but it doesn't always need to be treated in it's mild form. In fact it is even possible to kids to get it post a viral infection where it can cause an auto-immune response to their, often, calf muscles called myositis.

Marathon runners have been notoriously famous for finishing races with some amount of rhabdo, however it often doesn't need any treatement.

I read this article sometime ago on the strongfirst forum. A lot of these people that are attracted to crossfit and end up with this problem(no offense to anyone in particular), are the kind of people that would abuse any other form of training had they the opportunity. Hence you can't solely blame crossfit, but at the same time, crossfit is kind of a silly idea, its like being a handyman. No one calls the handyman unless they can't find anyone else.

.....crossfit is kind of a silly idea......

See, I love the idea of crossfit.  Being good at everything is a worthy goal.  It's pretty much what gymnasts do, except gymnasts don't snatch or clean and jerk.  But if coaches athletes are anything to go by, gymnasts are prepared for pretty much anything, which is what crossfit is aiming to achieve.

I got sidetracked.  The point is that the concept is really cool, it's just that the execution is often lacking.  When you look at the high level crossfit coaches, they generally seem to be pretty excellent.  When you look at the average crossfit enthusiast, they can seem a bit naff.  It's just like gymnastics.  On the one hand you've got guys like Coach, who excel at teaching people to be awesome.  On the other hand, you've got people throwing innocent trainees into regimens or exercises they're not ready for, and injuries occur.  But no-ones saying gymnastics is bad for you.

I used to love demonising crossfit, and to some extent I still do.  But they're too easy a target and if you dismiss them entirely you're missing out on all the cool stuff they're really doing.  Shit, I want to add some Olympic lifts to my training.  But I wouldn't be seen dead doing crossfit.....

. (...) I wouldn't be seen dead doing crossfit(...)..

let's look at this through this scope, Coach is running a seminar alogside Rob Wolff. this means several things, one. he's talking about nutrition. Coach is talking about GST. we all gotta know what our strong cards are and good teachers/students know when to pass a batton to a person who can do a certain thing better than you.

also, why would we bash on it if GST is an integral part of crossfit? albeit at the level of excecution, it's upto everyone to learn from the best( the real best, not the proclaimed and less the self proclaimed.)

third, don't feel so guilty about doing crossfit, bruh :P. people could be doing F1 with poor form, jumping ahead because they think they're too strong and then working on elements way out of their league. i know i've been there :P

it's more about what's going on in your head than what's going on outside of it. just IMAGINE the implications and impact the world would receive if -every- human being read a book like "how to win friends and influence people" by Dale Carnie, once every 2 years.

that's why it isnt a matter of "what" you do, so much as how excellent you do it. that's why Gymnast's isn't the only sport gold medal go-to sport, it's a way of thinking that seaps into every faction of your life.

just consider the fact of performing gymnastics at yur current age, condition, without Coach's guidance or Josh's nutrition info. (cheers to both of you, really, i feel great.)

just think if a universe like that existed :P

Just like any exercise/sport there are good coaches and athletes. If you looked at what the bad gymnastic coaches are doing to childrens bodies you would and thought all gymnastic coaches were the same you would never have looked at this site. The same goes with Crossfit there are great coaches and athletes as well as bad ones.

I think we need to stop bashing other sports and focus on the Gymnastic Strength Training™.
