Marcus Lim
Recently, a neighbouring country's forests have been burning...and the haze has blown over to mine. The PM2.5 is now over 200. Should I stop training for the moment? Will it have a significant effect? (I'm on F1/H1)
Ben Shulman
I'm in Tianjin, China, for the next few months, and air quality is consistently terrible. Most days PM2.5 is over 200, and has only dropped bellow 100 a few days in the months I've been here. As I understand, the usual recommendation is to avoid exertion when PM2.5 exceeds 200 or 250. Private and international schools here cancel outdoor sports and recess when PM2.5 is over 200. Exercising indoors is probably safer. You could also buy a mask. I've heard 3M makes a good PM2.5 construction mask; I've also read great reviews for this this one, which is made for sports: http://totobobo.com/ As I'm only in China a little while, I just try and avoid outdoor exertion when possible, and keep most of my workout indoors. China is great –– fascinating, welcoming, delicious –– but i'm looking forward to returning to a country with clean air.
