I am learning both magyar and sivado at the moment, and was wanting to know the correct technique and how to learn it.

My main question is; if I travel forward with my right hand first, should I travel back with the opposite hand first? Or is it just a preference thing?

Also if anyone has any techniques and learning drills, that would be much appreciated!

hey!

short answer: mostly the SAME hand leads!

very long answer follows:

are you circling clockwise or counter-clockwise? I will post here for COUNTER-CLOCKWISE anyways ;)

(even if I think you are clockwise because of your right hand beginning the travel...)

there are lots of possible ways to travel, so you can find your preferences later. Variation will help a lot. If you are once familiar with travels you will surely like playing around with new variations!

can you give more infos on your background pls, regarding to:

* what equipment do you have? competition-PH? with and without pommels? mushroom? mushroom with a pommel? pommels on floor?

* how many circles can you do?

* what is your hardest PH-skill so far (maybe this helps to find out how good your circles are)

*any video? :P

if you have got good circles and you are enough prepared, &

if you cricle COUNTER-clockwise I would recommand for a forward travel(magyar) to first try this variations on a PH without pommels:

* 1.5 circles on end

*  finishing the 2nd circle travel forward, while you replace your hand, with the left hand where the pommel would be and push hard with the other hand ;)

so now you are in a pushup position with your left hand under your left shoulder, and the right hand is more behind and underneath your chest. feel free to step up on the PH with your legs to feel the position!

if you mastered this steps a couple of times, you can anticipate the first step a bit better.

then you can beginn adding an extra little step before the first step!

so you do the first circle and beginning the second circle, you move just a bit further with your right hand (if there would be a pommel, you would still not touching it). this step makes the gap between lether and pommel smaller. this will help you when you do the travel with pommels later!

if you have mastered these first 2 cicles you can go on.

with every half circle (so with every new hand placement) you travel with your hands to a new position.

* so first put the left hand on the pommel, then the right hand on the pommel

* then step with your left hand to the lether between the pommels, then with your right hand

* step with left hand on the 2nd pommel) then with the other hand to the pommel

* then step with your left hand to the lether on the end of the horse, then with the other hand.

so with the start that I told above, you will have 5circles till you traveled from one end to the other

if you mastered the PH without the pommels.. try the first steps again with pommels and go step by step.

for clockwise circles just change the left to the  right hand and the right hand to left hand :P

for sivado, who was one of my coaches!!!!!! :)  I would again start with using a horse without pommels:

here it is the quite the same... for counter-clockwise you start traveling with your left hand first from the lether to the pommel-position!

useing a PH without pommels, I would recommand to step with your right hand also to the same position as your left hand was before! (quite the same as normal forward travel!)

when you mastered a complete forward and backwards travel on the PH without pommels, you can start using the pommels for the first steps again.

now what I found is easier for the majority for the sivado travel is to go to each position only with one hand:

So this is ANOTHER travel then I mentioned above! (however both are 3/3 travels and so a D-valued element!)

* left hand to first pommel

* right hand to lether between pommels

* left hand on 2nd pommel

* right hand to other end(lether)

so this travel variation needs only 3 circles!

good help for this variation is to circle on pommels and travel with your right hand between the pommels, then left hand to the (right) pommel, then right hand on lether, then left hand to lether. thats a normal B-value travel.. and the same movement you use in the sivado-variation with 3circles ;)

as last thing I wanna point out, that good circles are the key... and for travels make sure your hand placements are aline! if you have for example both hands on lether, they should be parallel. if you are turned sideways, your hips are proberbly turning too late (mostly the error is before!!).. and you SHOULD get each time 0.3 deduction in competition....

so stay long enough at the first steps till you really master them with proper form and technique! this will help for longterm!

Thanks for the reply! Really appreciate it - and super helpful

So at the moment I can do magyar ok (that is without handles), but struggling with sivado.

We have a mushroom, floor mushroom, handleless pommel and normal pommel.

I'l try what you've said above and see how it goes,

Cheers!
