hi, i have a question for every member who is involved in the teach of the gymnastics skill!!

i know that every skill has a progression, everything start from knowlodge of the skill, prevent the injury etc..

my question involve a breakdance skill..

maybe a great part of you know what is the move called airflare, you can also see on youtube..

suppose that you want to teach this skill, how you do it?

i know that is not a familiar skill for the gymnast, but looking inside the movement, what type of progression can you use?

thanks a lot for who answer

Seiji

Actually, the airflare is a gymnastics move. I don't know how they progress into it though haha

i know that this this does not have now a score because wasn0t performed in an international competition...and until now i have seen only 2 gymnast perform it correctly!!!

Start with circles on a mushroom.

When you get that let us know :)

There is no agreement in the bboy community who came up with airflares, as there were several who were doing it at the same time. The only thing certain is that Pablo Flores, an amecian from the crew soul control was the first to do continous airflares in 1998.

Airflares are very hard both to teach and learn. It is a move which is very very timing dependent as it is hard to know when to launch. Requirements are a solid handstand, the swing into it with legs locked in split, and at least windmills(windmills actually teach you more about the legs than flares, though having flares and swipes als help.) most bboys who can do airflares can usually also jump on 1 arm(helps with the push) and are good at stopping momentarily on 1 arm ina piked position with their legs over their body similar to the position which you jump from. The people who learn it the fastest are uaually those familiar with the other powermoves in breaking, since they all build on the same principle. If the ones you plan to teach can do flare-handstand you can have the try to throw it from there as it gives perfect rotation into it. A big thing for building up to it is getting over the fear of jumping around. You are jumping at the absolute most blind point where you have rotated so far that you will eithe push and go or fall on your head/back. However it is not really dangerous. As long as you even remotely try to push you will always get the hand to the floor before anything else. The hard part is catching so the legs stay up.

There are several tutorials on youtube which are quite good. They all cover it from slightly different perspectives. I cannot link to them as im writing from a phone, but search for airflare tutorial on youtube. Look up the one from Sambo, Stretch, Gambler, and mortal kombat, the 2 last have transations somewhere.

the only one tutorial that i consider useful is from bboy sambo...but my problem is the fear of what i can't see!!

i've read in a post on facebook on IDo portal whos was talking about the fear of backflip, where he explains that the best way to take ff your fear is knopw every type of falling movement in the back flip...

i think this is the best way to take of my fear, but try to fall down during the airflare is dangerous and the risk of injury is elevated!!! seems to be impossible to believe but i can do multiple elbowairflare but aplly the same priciples to the airflare seems to be damn hard!!! and i don't have the same fear, because the jump is is not so higher!!!

maybe trying this in a machine like bboy hitmonlee can help to lose the fear?

i've looked for that but seems that the result of use this is a lack of tecnique, you can see what i0m talgin about if you see the difference between hitmon and pablo flores...the fisrt one kick...the second swing!!!

He also said preparation leaves no room for fear. If memory serves me right, he mentions preparation to be, building the muscles for the movement, the movement itself, and breaking falls techniques.

I dont think falling will help you a whole lot on airflares. As you know elbows, i take it for granted that you know the swing into it. From my experience, what you need to learn is to that your arm always will catch you so you wont get seriously injured. Remeber to keep the landing arm straight or you will just fall down. When you become comfortable with throwing, no matter how bad they are in the beginning, you can start to work. As you might know there are several ways of throwing airflares. The main methods are throwing over your head so the angle is higher and more in a handstand. The second is throwing over your chest. I never got anywhere with the high variation and didnt learn until i learn to throw across the chest. However this varies from person to person. The next thing you need to find is the push. To get over you NEED to push off hard from the arm you are jumping from. It is the same type of push as in a handhop(so if you cant do that, consider to learn it). Next comes the hard part, as you can push with the power of the hulk and still get nowhere if your timing is off. You will need to learn to let your hips rotate far enough so that when you push it will go together with your legs. When you have gone far wnough you will actually be off balance slightly on your arm. THIS is what is scary. Not because you are off balance, but because you get to the blind spot the more you turn.

The way i measured my progress(i went across the chest, which usually means you go to low and too early off the arm) was to see how far my legs landed from my arm. In the beginning i landed in a pushup position. The better i got, the more piked i did land. The next step was to land on only the second leg and the to getting all the way over to both arms, but still the second leg going down. After that i hit it to flare and then to another airflare.

You can easily hit elbows without getting normal ones. I did the same for a long time. Now my airflare is really bad as i for some reason lost the timing completely for a while, but i am getting there again.

Put up some clips and i will try to help you

hi handbalancer..i had uploaded 2 clip of my airflares...

the first one is better in the form cause i try to take my legs spread...in both vids seems to be that i can't maintain my left arm straigth when i land, and i don't know if is a mental problem...yess my rigth arm is stringer than the left but also on the left i can do 3-4 handjumps..

thank you handbalancer...i want to know if i am on the rigth way...the people who train with me can do airflare...

i'm teaching to myself

You clearly go for the over the head technique, which is completely okay. You mainly have 1 big thing you need to focus on to be able to land it. Look at your arm position when you are on 2 arms and notice that when you jump, your left arm lands on the same line as your arms were on. An airflare works because your hips turn at the same point and your arms circle around them. Ideally, if your arms in the handstand are on 1 line, you want to jump to anothe line which is paralell to it. This is hard to explain in text. Both the mortal combat and the powermove conspiracy tutorials focus on this, so look there as an example.

The reason you do this, is because when you jump, you reach upwards. This makes your hand reach the floor too soon and outside your centre of mass. That is also why your arm needs to bend. I would advise you to start to try more and more to reach "under" you. The reson i say under is because that is how it feels. Since you have some fear i think you shouldnt try to directly throw over your chest, but to place the hand further and further down. This will also make you not land on the same line which brings me to the next point.

Seing where your hand lands on video will help you measure your progress. (90 degrees away from where it lands in your first clip would be "perfect" like the guy does in the mortal kombat tutorial). What you want to do is throw more and more toward that direction. This might also force you to wait slightly longer before you throw.

Train it every day if you can as you need time to get comfortable before throwing. You are on your way definitely. You need to figure out the direction of your throw but once you do you will get it

I looked again and the second clip is actually better. Notice that you turn more toward the direction i talked about.

thank you man, so from what i had seen in some tutorial the best thing to do is try to draw a circle with multiple airflare as the elbowairflare!!!

now i try it 3days a week...the next time i'll see if i do some progress and maybe i'll post a video...you notice that i pass the left arm over the head..is better over the chest? i think this is the only way to do is lower and more wide and in a parallel line of the handstand's start position!!

you mean this video at 1 minute and 1o sec is correct?

Mikael Kristiansen

Yes, what i mean is what he explains there. Starting to learn high is just a differenrt approach to airflares, and there is nothing wrong with it. You face sdifferent challenges when you do that, that is all. For you it seems like you should start to lower gradually. Also, when you jump with the body more vertical, it is harder to get all the way to thwe other paralel as he talks about, but it does not matter. Learn to reach more and more over time and you will move in that direction. Upload some progress video sometime!

thank you man, now i have a bursitis to my left elbow so i stop training since 2 weeks...i hope i heal faster...i want to learn airflare
