I thought I would try the compulsory routines on rings but I'm quite bad at the most basic ring swings. Does anyone have good advice to get started or a progression? Thanks!

The very first thing you need to spend time doing is learning how to push forward (with straight arms) and pull back (with straight arms) the rings (do not worry about the tap). Lean and develop a nice smooth rhythm. As you begin to get that you can start incorporating a tap, trying to synchronise the tap and the push/pull.

As you master this you can then begin to take the rings out wide on the back swing, and like it said in the Drills and Skills video. Keep chest and head down, while keeping the wrists onto of the rings in order to keep pressure down on the rings (for back swings)

For front swing the turnover to upside down is vital, if you can do this really quick you will be able to pull back and down the rings and you will get to rise above. At this stage you will need to be be turning the rings and inward so that you can get the wrsits again ontop of the rings in order to apply downward pressure.

This gets hard! and its requires a lot of good timing, strength, and skill understanding.

Hope that helps on getting you some idea of the ring swing technique

Yep, one of the worst things many guys do when starting to learn ring swing is taking the rings out to the sides because they see others or higher level gymnasts do it. It effectively kills their swing as they end up trying to muscle it.

For beginners, it's all about pushing the rings forward or pulling them back and then they start to turn the rings in the back swing. Then eventually the front swing.
