Aganasios,
After looking at your video, there is nothing wrong with your technique. The pain can’t possibly be stemming from you externally rotating your shoulders further than what your chest can allow.
In this case try to limit the external rotation just a little bit to allow your chest and biceps to stretch without causing the discomfort in the elbow.
Hey Athanasios,
Does your elbow continue to hurt after you stop the set?
The pain you are feeling can be the tissue of the troclea which comprise 4 strong muscle. doing some shoulder extension work before is a good way to warm up the shoulder.
@Everett Carroll No, after 1 minute i don't have any pain. But when i perform the im it's really intense to the point i have to stop it.
@Alessandro Mainente Which specific exercises would you suggest ??
To me, it appears your left elbow hyperextends. It's hard to say what to do about it.
Does the elbow hurt after you stop?
If you hold the stick 20 cm wider, does the elbow still hurt? (I would expect it to be different, since you are loading the elbow less).
@Nick Murray Yes i also feel that. No, it doesn't hurt after. The pain comes when i try to elevate the stick from chest height to shoulder height.Yes,even when i go super wide it's the same.
@Alessandro Mainente I tried the shoulder extension warm up and the pain still appears when i perform the standing extension. I got checked from an orthopedic and he says that i don't have an issue in the area . When i perform the Table mobility exercise i don't have any pain. What should i do ?
I can execute the headstand really easily but the mobility is a bigo NO from my body
What type of warm up do you perform before the im?
@Alessandro MainenteI start with my upper body workout, then i do the exercise you reccomended and then i proceed to my handstand workout
So what should i do ? I am unable to progress further... Can i change this mobility drill with something else?
There are two things you can do. Please note that they may both be impractical.
1. Use rigid (non-elastic) athletic/strapping tape to tape your left elbow into slight flexion. Perhaps 160 to 170 degrees. The tape should be firm enough to STOP your elbow from hyperextending. The tape and your skin WILL stretch though, which is why I suggest 160-170. If you can' t tape yourself, you may need to see a physiotherapist and get a proper elbow brace.
The problem, (IF, in fact, it is hypermobility) is that you cannot, and must not, rely on physical end-range of a joint for stability (or in the case of this mobility, to keep the elbow straight). There must always be some soft tissue feel towards end range (ligaments and the joint capsule).
2. You may be able to continue to work on mobility by hooking your arms over a horizontal bar and SLOWLY moving your hips forward (away from the bar). See the picture. This is not ideal: the whole point of the HS mobility is that you learn to move the shoulder joints through a large range (flexion, extension AND rotation).
However, at least by using a bar you are a) not hyperextending your elbow and b) your are still getting some mobility.
I strongly recommend you see a physio who has experience with gymnastics and/or circus performers, and get a proper evaluation.
