TBSSE16 HS Shoulder Flexion Press - Scapular Motion

Hey guys,

i have a question concerning scapular position/motion during TBSSE16. Should the scapula be protracted and elevated during the whole exercise (thus, as i understand it, focusing on "pure shoulder flexion", avoiding to dislocate)? If i remember correctly, this is the way we should perform HS/PE1>iM, which seems to me is a very similar exercise. I also believe this was the case with the supine/prone thoracic band pulls.

Or should we elevate and go from scapular protraction to retraction during the press (a "dislocate", if i understand it correctly)? In the videos for TBSSE16 and HS/PE1>iM the athletes go beyond 180°, which confuses me a bit.

Thanks,
C.

P.S.: I'm not a native speaker and am new to the whole nomenclature, so please correct where necessary. I'm especially not sure if i use/understand the term "dislocate" correctly, as used here.

Hi Carlos,

For this exercise, focus on strong scapular elevation and a straight body line with posterior pelvic tilt. The rest of your scapular positioning will be taken care naturally as you move in and out of shoulder flexion. This is similar to an inverted HS/PE1>iM. Certainly take your flexion beyond 180-degrees if you have that range of motion.

Thanks! I'll try it that way next time:)

Hey Carlos, during shoulder flexion with body positioning like the TB element you are asking for you should never try to dislocate or retract, it is the most dangerous situation in this case.

Thank you both, i tried the exercise yesterday taking your advice into account and have no trouble to report:)
