Are the gymnastic rings the right or good way to go in terms of lasting over many years/decades? Since there is soooo much tension with most of the exercises, could it POSSIBLY be harmful in the long run after many years?

Anything is possibly harmful if you train with a big ego or unintelligently and accumulate numerous injuries over your life time so that your joints hate you when you're old.
If you train smart and admit to yourself that you can't keep training the same exercises you did when you were 24 at the age of 70, then you'll be ok.

Also, check out this video of Art DeVany at 72. He doesn't do gymnastics, but he runs more youthfully than the 63 year old in the video above.
