How often and how quickly (how much weight should be added at each step) should weight progressions be added to Static Seated Shoulder Flexion with Weighted Bar? I have been using 10lbs. as suggested by GB trainers and feel that it may be time to move up a bit.

Everett Carroll

Hi Jay,

1) Always train this iM with a shoulder width grip. Begin with a light weight and build to the ROM demonstrated in the exercise videos.

2) Add a small amount of weight and repeat the process until you can perform the iMs with proper ROM and 5-10lbs (this is mastery weight).

3) I suggest submitting a form check to ensure mastery. After mastery is demonstrated with these specifications, you can continue to gradually increase the weight. After you master both the PE and iM and move on to the next progression, you can keep this iM in your warmup and continue to gradually increase the weight.

Is the weight for mastery higher for the iM for pe3? i.e. this for reps.

Alessandro Mainente

Yes, Liam.

Please notice that the point 1) or Everett it is partially correct. Actually you need to use a grip so that you can show a straight line beginning from wrists to shoulders and hips. tight people, no matter how much weight, are not able to hold the bar in flexion with proper open shoulders.

When you can progressively reach the shoulder grip it is time to add weight and begin again finding a grip where you can show a straight line as cited above.

Hi guys,

Alessandro's note brought up a question for me.  Does it matter if the wrists themselves roll backwards? (like the image) Assuming everything else in the form is legit.?

yes, it is a shortcut to reduce the leverage. no wrists extension it is allowed.
