When the shoulder extensions are demo'ed on the video Coach states to ensure hands are touching. I'm able to push my hands a little further back from the point where they were last touching, to the point where they're very close to touching but not quite, but further back.

So wondering is it absolutely essential hands always be touching, or is almost touching but further back good?

yes, it is necessary, feel free to wrap a towel!

What about those of us that have extremely tight shoulders and cannot even get our fingers to touch while sitting down on the floor behind us?

I will describe my situation (maybe post a photo if necessary):

While seated on the floor in long sitting, I cannot place my hands behind my torso with the palms facing down and fingers pointed away and then extend my arms backward along the floor.

Bottom line: I have been having a very difficult time with scaling shoulder extension for this stretch series.

Hi Lorenzo :)

As Alessandro mentioned you can use a towel and start about shoulderwith apart or closer if you can.

Another stretch you can do in order to improve the shoulder extension stretch is a scaled variation of German hang. If you stand with your back facing the stall bar/any bar, grab the bar behind you with an overhand grip and bend your knees and try to get as deep into the stretch you can. You can also spend more time doing table rocks an twisting bear. These also helps to loosen up :)
