Strength development and 60seconds holds

Hello,

Today I suddenly ran into this confusing(kind of) question to myself.

As we all know,

We are working on GST to gain more strength, and be stronger, which includes engaging more fast twitch muscles.

To achieve that we work on lots of exercises, but one thing that confuses me is that

lots of 60sec mastery workouts(mostly 'holds' like planche lean, hollow body hold, arch body hold and so on)

are more related to developing slow twitch muscles, which does not have that much to do with improving strength.

How can I get read of this contradiction that I have in my head?

I guess there must be something that I am missing or misunderstanding that leads to this question.

Could anyone give a clear answer or advice for this?

Thank you!!

Coach Sommer

Hi Taekeun,

Good question.  First we must build a physical structure that can handle the stresses of dynamic strength work.

And that means first focusing on building adequate mobility, basic strength and connective tissue health.  Dynamic work will come later.  For the time being, it is necessary to focus on first things first.

If you had had the misfortune—or perhaps good fortune, depending on how you look at it—of doing arch body holds as the first Pe in side lever, you'd not be asking this question.

The mobility and connective tissue deficiencies for most beginners of GST are, to put it bluntly, quite severe. Most of us start off with very poor thoracic spine mobility, poor ankle mobility, poor wrist mobility, and non-existent shoulder mobility—to mention just a tip of the iceberg. So to simply jump into plyometrics and other dynamic movements would be preempting a date with perpetual rehab all over the body.

If you have access to handstand 1, trying doing the mobility exercise for PE2 and see if you're one of the gifted exceptions. If not, try to patiently follow the progressions as the "fun stuff" will come sooner rather than later.
