Back Shoulder discomfort as limiting factor in MN PE6 and SL PE11

Hi guys,

i have the problem that i feel light pain/discomfort in the back of my shoulder when performing MN PE6 and SL PE11 and have the feeling that this makes me stop the exercise and not my abs or some muscle fatigue. Do you think i do it wrong? Should i add some special exercise to strengthen my shoulder?

Thank you

Jochen

Hi JOchen if it is involved on shoulder flexion and hyperextension you need to consider the possibility of having tight capsule. please check a physio for more detail.

Jochen Friedrich

Hi Alessandro, it is when i lift my legs up high to the head, otherwise i don´t feel it. But will check with my Physio and do the capsule stretch within my stretch series once a week anyway (and it is a gooood stretch)

Douglas Wadle

might help to see a video.  seems strange that it doesn't hurt when hanging, but does when you lift your legs up.  Shoulder angle shouldn't change much and if it does it might somewhat close, which shouldn't aggravate too much.

Maybe you just need to pad your stall bars a bit? I put a camping or yoga mat on mine for anything HLR-like else the bars dig into my upper back a lot.

Hi i feel the same MN/PE6 + MN/PE7 when using a gymnastic "rib" (the ladder thing on the wall) not sure that is what they are called :-(... But when im free hanging(no support on the back of my shoulders i feel fine). Thought it was just me having a hard time...

Eva Pelegrin

I get that too, Jochen. I believe it has to do with the activation of our lats and shoulders at the very end-range (10 to 12 o'clock). Passive or active hanging is fine for me too.

I asked Coach in my last seminar and he said to only go as high as I can with my legs before the pinching pain occurs, until we adapt.

I've been at this PE for months and it's taking a while to gain the necessary ab strength with the combo of shoulders fully flexed and spinal flexion.

Thank you for your help! It is already getting better- i hope it stays that way

Just wanted to give some feedback - it seems like the iM work for the handstand course might really help. Just my feeling - excited about the longer term effects!

Mikkel Ravn

I thought my shoulders were going to explode doing these initially, it was that unpleasant. It went away, however over the course of a few months. Stay the course, and do a modest amount of reps until you adapt.

Jochen Friedrich

Thank you @Mikkel Ravn- that´s good to know

FYI - it is getting better and better - but still is the limiting factor for this exercise. Am on this level for a while, now. Same in the HS course, i fell i get better finally after like 8 months of a plateu, but still not there

Douglas Wadle

Sounds like you're moving in the right direction!  That is a long time, but clearly there is some weakness there that needs sorting out.  Still would be glad to see a video to ensure it's not a form/technique issue.  That's why we do foundation...to work out those weak points so we can move on to higher level strength exercises.

Hi @Douglas Wadle here is a recent video

. Grip is still wide because it is easier that way. My plan is to narrow the grip once i get to 5x5. After a intense workout on this i feel my shoulder upper arms a few days and after a deload i do the reps way easier.

The windshield wiper feel way easier than in the beginning

I feel the progress - but never thought it takes that long. Also i feel how it seems to open my neck region - a area where i was way too immobile

Jochen Friedrich

What i feel next day after this two workouts is a slight pain when lifting my arms on the side to form a "T". Then i rotate the palms up and down to warm and losen it up which really helps in order to start my workout

HI Jochen, for a deeper discussion on the stall bar variation of SL progression considers creating a specific post so that all the students can benefit from it.

Jochen Friedrich

@Alessandro Mainente- no problem! What do you think is a good topic and beginning for the discussion? Or would it help if i change the topic of this thread to something more meaningful?

Alessandro Mainente

Simply open a topic with the name of the exercise which you are focusing on the video in the correct section.
