I'm having problems getting enough weight over my head to really begin to get a stretch out of this position. Is it acceptable to support my hips with my hands in order to get my feet and knees past my head. I've seen this done with "plow" (I think) pose in yoga.

That's totally fine Nicholas. I'm just brainstorming here but maybe you could attach one end of a band to a wall/bar and the other to your ankles. That would allow you to keep your arms down during the stretch.
