When you depress your shoulders, should your shoulder blades be protracted or retracted?

Thanks!

Alessandro Mainente

During shoulders extension you should avoid the protraction that could leads to shoulders injury.

Thank you - so does the same apply to the depression?

Mark Collins

With depression the shoulder blades are more in neutral, which is the mid position between retracted and protracted. This is training the brain to control the shoulder blades. As you improve your motor control you can then try variations of depression/retraction and depression/retraction. The shoulder already does this all day you just are not aware of it yet.
