It's rarely black and white on these kind of issues. My vote would be good. It's the true whole grain that is talked about with regards to the mediterranean diet, that has been so bastardized that it is unrecognizable. Of course, real barley has to be cooked for nearly an hour to make it palatable. Most barley products are refined, but whole grain barley is a good source of nutrients. Don't go for pearled barley, as it's been processed to remove a lot of the good parts. Hulled barley, the good stuff, does have a fairly high Omega 6:3 ratio, so should be counterbalanced with fish or other sources of omega 3's. It's fairly high in protein.
