Sorry, searched the forum but couldn't find a definitive answer. Can rows (hinge, incline, reg, etc) be done on a smith machine instead of rings? Or are the rings absolutely necessary?

Andrew Long

probably not hinge rows.   not sure about the rest.

Gavin Strelitz

I don't think you can do hinge rows on a Smith Machine, but for everything else they are fine. The Smith Machine actually becomes very handy for later Dip, Pullup and FL progressions.

If you don't have access to rings then try a TRX, as this will allow the body to travel in between the arms.

Ideally I would say to invest in some rings as they allow for rotation of the wrists and forearms.

I don't know if it's a deal breaker for mastery tests or not; so wait for a mod on that. But seeing at it's pretty tough to perform hinge rows without them, I'd say just buy a set :)

In the RC progressions up to PE5, you need to --- as Gavin says, pull your body through you arms You need to turn your wrists for that pull. You need rings for that.

Buy some rings. If you're working out in a gym, find a machine that you can attach the rings to. Or find a tree and attach the rings to a branch.

Rings are better since the rotation of the support ensures a total conditioning of the elbows flexors from pronation, semi pronation and supination.
