Half-layout planche is awkward?

Does anyone else find it awkward and kind of weird to get into this position for the planche and front lever? Or am I alone on this?

For FL, not so much. It still is a bit different because there is the weight at the end of lever being your lower legs.

I don't have a problem with it in BL.

Can't do it in PL so I can't say.
