Conditioning vs Foundation

When we are doing our foundation work, are we doing conditioning or are we building a base of strength?

When does conditioning come into play? When do we do that?

I'm still learning how to distinguish various definitions, but from what I've read I'm thinking that Strength is what we're looking for as an athlete and Conditioning(or Conditioned) is what you do to the athlete or where they find themselves in the training. so you can say we've been made "stronger" in GST and hence, are conditioned to do movements like Hollows, Arch, etc.

if what you mean is work capacity, we are doing that as we speak because not only are we developing a base of strength but also programming it in a way where with little rest vascularization takes place to improve metabolic turnover in the area. this makes doing higher level movements at a lower perceived effort. a combination of strength, mobility and the ability to chemically remove wastes effectively + oxigenate surrounding tissue is what I am understanding when you say conditioning.

is this what you mean?

You will do conditioning at the end of F4. nothing before.

so conditioning for us would be the pre-strength R1 warm up?

Dylan Robertson

Isn't the R1 Warmup basically F4?

Alessandro Mainente

Yes

Oh, so conditioning is basically doing one set of different exercises in high reps in a circuit?

What is the purpose of conditioning? Maintainence or getting in shape? Or joint health? It can't be for endurance?

Technically, everything is conditioning, since conditioning is nothing more than utilizing a stimulus to result in a desired response. But in the common usage of the word, conditioning is usually used to refer to energy system development. Due to the way Foundation is structured you will get some energy system training, but that isn't its main goal. The main goals of foundation are to build adequate active flexibility, muscular hypertrophy, connective tissue strength, and a base of muscular strength to prevent you from getting injured when you begin training intermediate and advanced level gymnastic strength skills. So to answer your question, it's more of a strength program. Coach has said that strength must be developed before specific work capacity training is included. So dedicated "conditioning" work will come later, even though some or the locomotive drills that are surely to be a part of Movement will impart a degree of energy system/work capacity development. Hope that helps!

To add to that excellent post above me you can also see conditioning as maintenance work; maintaining the base you already have while working on increasing it outside of conditioning.

Have we forgotten about the 'Hungarian'?

Take it easy now.. One thing at a time.

Bro'

Well, sure, one thing at a time, but Hungurian sure sounds like conditioning and it does come after Foundation, Handstand and Movement are mastered!

So yeah, conditioning later.  ;)
