David Sender performed this beautiful Yurchencko double pike on Day 1 of this year's Visa Championships. David is currently sitting in second place for the all around.
This performance does however highlight a serious discrepancy in the scoring tables. All the events are not weighted equally in regards to all around standings. For example, it is possible to attain such huge scores on vault that they complete offset mediocre performances on the pommel horse as shown by Jonathan Horton currently being first in all around and Sender in second; despite their having placed 25th & 26th respectively on pommel horse.
This problem is of particular concern due to the recent restructing of the Olympic Mens Gymnastics Teams by the International Olympic Committee down to 5 man teams from 6. The previous format encouraged the use of event specialists, however these new changes will give a huge advantage to any team whose members are equally proficient at all of the events. The next Olympics should be quite interesting indeed.
