What can rc pe/se help you accomplish?

Hej everyone,

My friend asked me how they could achieve a type writer pull up where you pull up and then go from side to side without dropping.

I was going to recommend the rc progressions but would they be enough for him and if so a what point in the progression do you think he could achieve the type writer?

Also should he add any other specific training for it and If so at what point in the rc progression should he do that?

Atm he can sometimes do 1 pull up if he isn't too tired.

Cheers

The pull up progressions aren't until Foundation 2.

However RC/PE1-6 will develop a solid foundation for most pull ups.

If you have pull-ups, typewriter pullups are easy.

I think if someone mastered l-sit wide arm up pull ups they might find that slow controlled typewriter like you always see in the street workout videos where they move their feet like they are walking sideways.

But just being able to do regular pull ups no way. Another friend of mine can do sets of 5 pull ups and can barely do a single typewriter

Yeah your friend will find typewriter pullups easy somewhere around the end of F2.

Alright I guess I'll get them onto foundation then. Would it be a good idea once they master rc pe6 to through in some archer pull up static holds at the top position?

Not really. It'll most likely just interfere with the other RC progressions.

But their goal is specifically a type writer not rc so wouldn't something more specific be useful?

Working hard on two similar movements at the same time tends to be counterproductive. I'd have them master up through all the pullup progressions and then add in some specific work if they're still unable to do the typewriter. The typewriter isn't a unique or complex enough movement that it should require much specific work to develop.

Progressing from barely one pull up to a typewriter pull up with, say, four slow side-to-side movements will take half a year to a year (at least). The Foundation RC progressions are great for a goal like that, not in the least because you know exactly where you are and can read about other people’s frustrations (with for example RC PE6, bent arm static hang). Moreover, by the time you can do your typewriter pull up, you will realize that there is still a whole lot of other fun movements to go (and train) for. In my experience a good typewriter pull up takes a bit of practicing the sideways movement while keeping your chin over the bar. RC does not (completely) prepare you to maintain the upper body tension that you need for that. If you need to motivate your friend, the following video may help.

Once you have a pullup, it shouldn't be hard

Awesssss

What about the planks in SpL and the hollow body holds in FL, aren't they similar in a way that they both train your PPT?

Yes, they both train PPT, but the primary goal of Planks is scapula stability, PPT is secondary.  Whereas PPT is primary in hollow.

That's a different scenario than in which 2 exercises are both to develop pulling strength in this case

I'm only on PE:6 but today I had a chance to climb a proper rope. Was able to climb it without using my legs so was pretty please with that. It wasn't as pretty as the SE's but damn I was pleased with myself.
