Make sure the knees are slightly in front of the hips: if they are directly above or behind the hips, the jump from PE2 to PE3 may be too difficult (and you won't receive credit for mastering PE1/2).
A soft mat is recommended, particularly if you have a pointy tail bone.
Try to have good PPT: you know you have enough when your lower back is pressed firmly into the floor.
Round your upper back enough for the shoulder blades to come off the floor.

FL/PE1: tucked hollow body hold

I always go through these steps to make sure I do it correctly:
PPT, back flat to floor
Press the legs together (knees touching)
Squeeze the butt
Press abs to floor (no belly bulge)
Fight to keep these cues active as you lift up shoulders and feet. Feet only rise a few inches from floor, shoulder blades off the floor.
