Journey Through Gymnastic Bodies

Just started Foundations 1 and Handstand 1 and have been completely humbled. I was a swimmer throughout my life up until the end of high school, then in college i got into Barbell Training and weightlifting via Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe. Got really big and strong running this program and similar programs. Best High bar squat was 405 at 208lb bw. powercleaned 225lb. press 175lb. dead over 405lb. Bench 290lb.

Was fun getting that strong but then i heard about Ido Portal through an elliott hulse video and was stunned by his control over his body and the things he could do and realized how weak i really was holistically. Oddly at the same time i was pretty lost and bored with my training with barbells, and was looking for something new. Not sure how i heard about gymnastic bodies, but when i heard Coach Sommer's philosophy about training from the ground up without ego, i instantly resonated with his message and had total buy-in. I am even going to the Chicago Seminar coming up in august.

So, this is my log for f1/h1 and beyond.

Started about 2 weeks ago testing everything out.

For F1 this is where i will be standing come monday:

FL/PE1 - Week 9

sPL/PE3 - Week 11

SL/PE1 - Week 5

MN/PE2 - Week 1 (this is gonna be a hard one)

SLS/PE1 - Week 2

HBP/PE2 - Week 9

RC/PE1 - Week 10

The integrated mobility for all PE's are (to my eyes) at the mastery level.

For H1 this is where i will be standing come monday:

WP/PE3 - Week 11

FKP/PE3 - Week 11

WR/PE3 - Week 11

FTP/PE3 - Week 11

HS/PE2 - Week 5

HS/PE2>iM needs work also

Stay Tuned. Until Next Time...

7.7.14

FL/PE1 (Hollow Body Hold): 4x48s

  • Hit every single set although was shaky  ;)

FL/PE1>iM (Cat Cow): 5rep

  • Good Stretch really felt it

sPL/PE3 (Plank): 5x60s

  • Pretty Easy  B-) i thought plank on the forearm was harder personally. Moving on to PE4

sPL/PE3>iM (Straddle Modified Reverse Hyper): 5r

  • Felt the burn on this one, but succeeded

HBP/PE2 (Push-Up): 5x15

  • Mastered last week, but then heard about PPT and decided to go again. Not as easy this time, probably because i was thinking about it so much, but completed. Moving on to PE3 and keeping these in the warm-up.

HBP/PE2>iM (Xiaopeng): 5rep/arm

  • Had a weird sharp feeling in my left thumb and index finger at the top of this movement. Didn't happen on my right side. Not sure what that was about.

RC/PE1 (XR Rows): 4x12r

  • Damn these are hard. I finished the sets but it was a grinder at the end. I can do a ton of pull-ups, so this doesn't really make sense.

RC/PE1>iM (Lat Stretch): 30sec/arm

  • Done

Practiced some Capoeira after. Overall solid session.

Until Next Time...

Sean Hunter

7.8.14

SL/PE1: 5x60s

  • Got all sets, not pretty, but got all sets. Probably gonna do 5x60s once more before moving on.

SL/PE1>iM: 10r

  • Mastery

MN/PE2: 3x6r

  • Not proper form. It doesn't feel hard, strength wise, but i can't get my body into this position...yet  B-)

MN/PE2>iM: 5r

  • Used a 40lb bar...these are tough as i go reallllyyyy slow
  • Masterd

SLS/PE1: 3x6r

  • Getting alot easier

SLS/PE1>iM: 10r

  • I feel these alot more on my left hip as opposed to my right

WRS #1-4

  • Goodiess

WP/PE3:5x5

  • Tough but mastered

FKP/PE3: 5x5

  • Mastered

WR/PE3: 5x5

  • Had a weird pain in my left thumb and index finger during the "away rock" continued on. I felt this same pain in my left thumb and index during xiaopengs...

FTP/PE3: 5x5

  • Mastered

HS/PE2: 5x36s

  • Struggled getting into the headstand on the fifth set but got it done  :icon_twisted:
  • feeling the burn in my shoulders

HS/PE2>iM: 10s

  • Need a lot more extension. Don't think i'm at shoulder level, and i am kinda leaning forward.

Did about an hour of capoeira after, then had a 2-hour capoeira class a few hours later. beat right now.

Until Next Time...

Sean Hunter

7.10.14

FL/PE1: 5x60s

  • Mastered, but wasn't easy. Ready to move on.

FL/PE1>iM: 5r

  • Mastered

SPL/PE4: 30s/arm

  • i felt as if i mastered this...im gonna video this next time and see how i look

SPL/PE4>iM: 10r

  • Not sure ho wide my straddle was, but other than that this was easy.

HBP/PE3: 5x10r

  • Got like 9 on my first set, 9 on the next...not even close to mastery. Need to make sure i am getting the lean down with proper protraction and depression. (i dont know what depression means)

HBP/PE3>iM: 5r/arm

  • Used an 8lb db. Looks like it's not going out to the side. I had a weird pain in my left thumb at the top of the movement.

RC/PE1: 5x15

  • Need to move back...

RC/PE1>iM: 30sec/arm

  • Feels good

WS #1-4: GOOD

WP/PE3: 5x5 GOOD

FKP/PE3: 5x5 GOOD

WR/PE3: 5x5 Still having that pain in my left thumb and sometimes index finger whenever i rock away

FTP/PE3: 5x5 GOOD

HS/PE2: 5x36s

  • Felt pretty easy today

HS/PE2>iM:10 sec

  • Almost there...

Yesterday i was outside all day and didnt eat much, so this may have contributed to this tough session. Also, my costal cartilage was pretty inflamed this warning so that also held me back.

Need to get form checks on PPP and Xiaopeng.

Going to move on from hollow body holds.

Did a bunch of stretching after the session as per my Capoeira teachers instructions...apparently i have retardedly tight hammies...

Until Next Time...

Sean Hunter

7.11.14

SL/PE1: 5x60s

  • Gonna drop this down. My chest and legs are off the ground the whole time, but im not in as full extension as possible.

SL/PE1>iM: 10r

  • Mastered

MN/PE2: 3x6r

  • Needs form improvement. May just keep it at 5x15, because its not a strength issue necessarily.

MN/PE2>iM: 5r

  • Mastered

SLS/PE1: 3x6r

  • Good

SLS/PE1>iM

  • Mastered

Did a lot of stretching after. Expect some video form checks of MN/PE2 and probably my single arm plank for next week.

Until Next Time...

Sean Hunter

7.14.14

FL/PE2: 5x60r

  • Didn't have a smooth enough rock, need to watch the video again and record myself

FL/PE2>IM

  • This was really easy

sPL/PE4: 5x30s/arm

  • THought i mastered but probably am slightly piked going to run again and record for form check

sPL/PE4>iM: 10r

  • Mastered, although could straddle my legs out farther

HBP/PE3: 3x4r

  • DId alot better this time, but need to get into a stronger hollow position and depress shoulders (finally found out what that meant)

HBP/PE3>iM: 54/arm

  • Used 10lb db. Pain in left thumb and index is gone  :)

RC/PE1: 4x12

  • THis is just an odd movement. I dont see myself struggling with basic ring rows the same way i am with this...

RC/PE1>iM: 30sec/arm

  • Mastered

:not_the_easter_egg: <------ What the hell is this???

Tweaked my neck the other night while screwing around with a forearm headstand  Sometimes hear a little grind sound when i turn my head left, but overall just feels stiff. I stretched my neck, took NSAIDs, and contrast shower. Hopefully it will feel better tomorrow...

Until Next Time  :not_the_easter_egg:

Sean Hunter

7.15.14

SL/PE1: 4x24s

  • I really focused on extending my body as much as possible here. I felt my knees come apart every now and then, but overall felt much better

SL/PE1>iM: 10r

  • Mastered, although i felt a little pain in my right hip. I may be pushing it too much or it is too used to being frozen

MN/PE2: 4x6r

  • Needs more ROM and leg extension. Like i said before this one is just gonna take alot of time

MN/PE2>iM: 5r

  • Getting deeper

SLS/PE1: 4x9r

  • Was a little unbalanced on the 4th set but completed

SLS/PE1>iM: 10r

  • This is just weird thing, i think im doing it right, but i dont feel much.

I was gonna do PE4 for all my wrist/finger prep, but after one set moved back to PE3 for all of them. Gonna stick with PE3 and work on the lean and not piking.

I decided not to do headstands today, i probably could have as my neck felt alot better this morning, but ill see how it feels come thurs.

HS/PE2>im: 10s

  • I kinda just messed around here and tried to get my form better. I experimented with arm distance and weight of the bar. However, my head is still moving forward....

Until Next TIme  :not_the_easter_egg:

Sean Hunter

7.17.14

FL/PE2: 4x48r

  • Ugly Form, need to either move down or back to bent hollow holds.

FL/PE2>iM: 5x30s

  • Mastered

sPL/PE4: 5x30s

  • Piked, probably should move back to normal PE3

sPL/PE4>iM: 10r

  • Mastered

HBP/PE3: 3x4r

  • Not bad...gonna stick with it

HBP/PE3>iM: 5r/arm

  • Mastered

RC/PE1: 4x12r

  • Good, gonna continue with 4x12

RC/PE1>iM: 30s/arm

  • Good

WRS #1-4: Good

WP/PE3: 5x5 - Tough

FKP/PE3: 5x5 - Good

WR/PE3: 5x5 - Good

FTP/PE3: 5x5 - Good

HS/PE2: 4x48s

  • Good

HS/PE2>iM: 10s

  • Used a wooden broomstick with a pretty wide grip, but had no lean...really felt it in my traps

Until Next TIme... :not_the_easter_egg:

Sean Hunter

7.18.14

SL/PE1: 4x24s

  • Felt good...long extension

SL/PE1>iM: 10r

  • Mastered

MN/PE2: 4x6r

  • Gonna take a while on this one, hopefully get some tips at the Chicago Seminar

MN/PE2>iM: 5r

  • Good, gonna keep working on extending ROM

SLS/PE1: 5x9r

  • So much easier than the first time i tried this

SLS/PE1>iM: 10r

  • I guess im doing this right, not feeling much in my hips

Until Next Time...

Sean Hunter

7.21.14

FL/PE1: 5x 60s

  • Went back to this because PE2 felt unstable...This is still tough but got it done with good form

FL/PE1>iM: 5r

  • Mastered

sPL/PE3: 5x60s

  • I went back to this to see if i was piked in any way...looks just like the video in the course portal so moving on

sPL/PE3>iM: 5r

  • Mastered

HBP/PE3: 4x6r

  • I need to lean alot more forward my hands at the bottom are only at the waist but i had good hollow body

HBP/PE3>iM: 5r/arm

  • i used 12lbs this time. Really felt it too.

RC/PE1: 4x15

  • I fell at the 10th rep of the 4th set. WHY IS THIS SO HARD!???!! oh well gonna move back to 4x12

RC/PE1>im: 30s/arm

  • Stretched out

I feel i need to eat more, but its hard to justify because when i was lifting heavy ass weights i really felt like my body needed the excess calories for strength. But this is like muscle endurance. I dont want to get fat, but probably need to eat more carbs and see what happens. Most of my carbs come from fruit, yams, and dairy. Dont eat bread or rice very often (like once a month). Need more vegetables and creatine...

Until next time...

Sean Hunter

7.22.14

SL/PE1: 5x36s

  • Perfect

SL/PE1>iM: 10r

  • Mastered

FTP/PE3: 5x5

HS/PE2: 5x60s

  • Mastered

HS/PE2>iM: 10s

  • Form is there no lean, but hands are really wide. May need to keep up with PE2 until i get a more narrow hand position
Sean Hunter

FL/PE1: 5x60s

  • Mastery

FL/PE1>iM: 5r

  • Mastered

sPL/PE4: 30s/arm

  • Mastered. video'd and didnt see any pike

sPL/PE4>iM: 10r

  • Mastered

HBP/PE3: 4x4

  • I told myself to lean more forward for this time. I got the right amount of lean. I had enough but i lost hollow body on some reps and failed on the last set completely. Going back to the start

HBP/PE3>iM: 5r/arm

  • Used 12lb db. Mastered

RC/PE1: 4x12

  • Realized the reason this is so hard for me is because im doing it wrong. Im pulling up then hinging at the hips. I need to just hinge. I did that on the first set and it was incredibly easy, but then i kept pulling up into a row...

RC/PE1>iM: 30s/arm

  • Mastered

WRS #1-4

WP/PE3: 5x5 ready to move onto PE4

FKP/PE3: 5x5 Did 2 sets of PE4

WR/PE4: 5X5 ready for pe4

FTP/PE4: 5x5x could probably move onto pe4

HS/PE2: 5x60s

  • had some balance issues but overall got it done. Kinda pissed that im going to keep having to do this until my mobility element is mastered, but its all part of the game.

HS/PE2>iM: 10s

  • Im actually not sure the weight im using. It's not listed on the bar, i just realized how dumb that is. My grip is getting narrower, but it is no where near what the video looks like. This movement has given me crazy soreness

One week until i leave for the Chicago Seminar, shits about to get real.

Until Next Time...

WRS #1-4

WP/PE3: 5x3 - felt good today. gonna move on to PE4 lower block

FKP/PE4: 4x5 - Struggled gonna drop further

WR/SE4: 5x5 - Drop...felt that same pain in my left thumb and index finger on the ulnar extension

FTP/SE3: 4x4 - Drop...need to get more clarity on form here. when i come out of the push up, i push back so my hands are out in front                          of me rather than below my shoulder.

HS/PE2: 5x30s

  • Mastered...on to pe3

HS/PE2>iM: 10s

  • To my eyes this is mastered, i don't see any unnatural lean and my arms are at shoulder level. Still, i am going to keep it in the warm up and post a form check to make sure. I may have biased eyes.
