"Warm-up" is a relative term. It doesn't necessarily mean the first thing that you do in the gym. If you're working very high level skills, then you're definitely going to be warming up in stages. In general if you're doing a gymnastics training session, you'll have your basic warmup, with some light cardio work followed by some light mobility, flexibility and strength elements. Then if you're going on to event work, you'll start by warming up with some basic drills and skills on that event. If you're warming up for a routine, you'll take a few passes to do skills that are in your routine. If you're going to be working on strength elements, you'll warm up by doing some easier/simpler variations. "warming up" with inverted crosses and malteses doesn't mean they came off the street and started doing those cold. It just means they were preparing to do something harder - probably either routines or strength sequences.
