Landing Page Strategies

We are finding that our landing page is relatively irrelevant as the vast majority of our 20K+ weekly new visitors are coming directly from google into a specific thread on the forum and then heading elsewhere.
To this end we are currently implementing a very nice email harvest popup on the forum that appears when a non-registered/non-logged in visitor lands in the forum.
That's excellent, and such leads are certainly high quality.
Perhaps we can implement multiple strategies for getting sign ups.
E.g. the pop up, and a fixed or scrolling sign up widget for those who initially dismiss the pop up.
@Cory - Do you know what a realistic sign up goal would be out of 20K visitors not on the mailing list?
It's the conversion rate and quality of traffic that matters more. If we obtain even .5% conversion, that's a significant boost to the course sales. What we need to fine tune with practice is the visual and copy that will attract high quality leads who either are
1) Ready to buy but simply are unaware of the brand and products
2) Have a genuine interest in finding out more about what we offer
We want to avoid low-quality traffic that will not purchase no matter what we do.
Here is the current popup. It shows to guests when viewing a forum or topic. Text is placeholder until harvest is ready
Proposed harvest based closely off Robb Wolf's homepage.
