Hi everyone,

question regarding protraction during a push up and a pseudo planche pushup.

It's mentioned in a few threads that you should strongly protract at the top of a pushup and

a ppp.

Do i have to KEEP the protraction while narrowing down to the floor while performing

a ) pushups

b ) pseudo planche pushups

?

I think the shoulders shoud change into a  neurtreal position maybe slight retraction at the bottom of both movements but i'm not shure about it.

any clearification?

you're right, if you maintain a protraction throughout, your chest isn't going to get anywhere near the floor. start from protraction in plank and as you descend do exactly as if you were doing a scapular shrug, only this time your arms are moving. you can place less emphasis on the retraction on HBP2.

I think you keep somewhat protracted in the bottom of the pushup, but not fully protracted like at the top. Move naturally.

Thx guys!

@ Zach Armijo: Indeed i think i am able to fully protract at the bottom of the movement. But i didn't thougt it would be correct.

Coach Sommer

Maintaining full protraction at the bottom of the movement is impossible.

That leaves us with two options; you are either protracting incorrectly or you have a congenital defect.  My money is on incomplete protraction.   ;)

hey coach,

maybe i misunderstood. so what i really wanted know was if i should actively retract at the bottom or just move naturally and only fully protract at the top of the movement.

Move naturally and protract at the top.

Thx alot!

What do you guys think about this? He looks he has the same amount of protraction throughout his whole ROM and they look pretty protracted, but he might just be a tiny bit away from full protraction. I can get pretty much very protracted at the lower bent arm planche position too sometimes. I find that squeezing the floor at the bottom as well as the whole ROM to be beneficial for protraction and not just squeezing at the top.
