hi to everyone, tomorrow will be my day.

i'll attend my first gymnastic competition in order to decide who will compete for our society for the following matches..

i admit that i'm very very very nervous/excited/afraid....is a set of strange moods..

probably this evening i won't sleep...usually it happens when i have to do a performance..

how do you manage the stress before the competition?

what is your experience?

opinions are very appreciated...

Well, new experiences tend to make us feel the way we would not want to feel. It is absolutely normal to be stressed at your first competitions.

There is nothing much that you can do to prevent this, It just means that you lack the competition experience. Professional and world class athletes have seen and participated in many competitions and they are more used to them than grass hoppers.

It is actually very important to manage this stress by attending to more competitions if your goal is to take this sport seriously because the stress can have a bad impact on your performance. So try yo keep a calm mind.

I remember after my competitions in Tae Kwon Do I was stressed too and I saw that it had a bad impact on my performance but after the competition it felt like it was no big deal and I thought of myself how foolish I was to be this scared at first.

Competing is a part of ones training - The more you play the game the better you become :)

Alex,

I´m sure you have prepared yourself to a 100% so you can´t do anything about untill tomorrow. I ´m sure you have other interests in life try  to occupy yourself as much as possible with other things so you dont have time to worry.

WHEN tomorrow comes try to go into your own bubble and visualize your routine in your head. Try to find the "feeling" you had when your routine felt realy good. I´m sure you have had trainings where everything just felt great. Try to get your head into this feeling.

All the best!

Mats

Imagine how nervous the other competitors are for going against you :-)

Alessandro Mainente

Learn to love and manage the stress and how it impacts your ability to perform.

Some stress is good and improves performance but too much will decrease performance levels and you won't be able to even remember basics.  Meditation is a great tool for managing stress, imagine the feeling of emotions and you going out and doing your best, not necessarily performing flawlessly but working through the challenges and finishing well.  Film the competition if possible and then return to your training so that no matter what you will go out and perform better next time.  Have fun!

breathe deeply and consciously. this will regulate your heart and your emotions. trust me, breathe deep, breath with rhythm and have your fun.

this supposed to be FUN, competition makes things fun-ner :)

I have often been one who doesn't sleep very well or at all for my competitions, be they myself or just when coaching big meets.

That being said, try to get some rest somehow or sleep. It makes a huge difference.

You go out there, you roll the dice. Ya see what comes up.

Alessandro Mainente

the training day with the team coach is done. yesterday night i did not sleep well...to much stress..

my routines were good. i'm sure that the landings were not very good and also the rings swing, but also not to bad...an average...i feel myself good, shoulders are ok..

tomorrow i'll have to do the routines!

it's done, rings good, pbars good, ph bad..1 fall during a transition. i'm satisfied , next week i'll know if i am in the team but different things are considered, the final score of the exercises, the general bodyshape, and the single apparatus exercise...so i will see..

not bad for the first competition, after the first event i was less stressed!!

Well done Alex! The more you compete the less stressed you're gonna be.

FredInChina

Well done!

Did you make the team? :)

Alessandro Mainente

unfortunately not , i'm actually a first reserve, i think for both my consistence on training and for the total score. i have to admit that i can compete only on 3 event. so the contribute to the team competition has a big value..

but I do not discourage...
