Dealing with elbow tendonitis/muscle strains

Well, I've been playing with weighted pull ups and the left elbow is getting sore, and worse on the same program. My question is, besides just resting, can you just cut your volume and workouts short. Like if I take 95% of my max, and can do 7 singles regularly, but am now down to 4 before the pain hits, can I just do two and call it quits for the day. Or maybe just go back to bodyweight, so long as the reps are cut well shy of pain. I don't like the idea of doing nothing.

I'd lay off the weighted until it goes away and start ramping them up much slower going for 3-5rm instead of singles.
