Preparatory and Mobility exercises question

Hey guys, quick question:

suppose that you master one of the PE (preparatory elements), but you don't feel like you have proficiency with its associated iM (mobility exercise). What should one do? Skip the mobility exercise and go to the next variation entirely? (i.e. next PE and next iM)

Or should you just go to the next PE and keep doing that iM that you haven't mastered?

Or should you stay with the mastered PE and not-yet-mastered iM?

Progression requires mastering both the PE and the iM. You must master the IM before moving on to the next PE. The rationale behind this is that developing strength in excess of mobility makes gaining mobility even harder, and it becomes a vicious cycle where mobility chronically lags behind.

Hi 3runMX,

I asked this very question of Coach Sommer at the Seminar.  You should stay with the mastered PE and no-yet-mastered iM.  the iM and PE should be seen as so integrated that if you can't master one, then you haven't mastered the level.  The reason for this is that the iM is crucial development for proper ROM and injury prevention for the more advanced elements.  Don't be frustrated that you are not advancing, you are advancing, it is just that your body is telling you that you are strong enough for your current mobility, and that you need to focus more on mobility than pure strength training for the time being.  Focus on your weakness if you want to improve!  Remember, training is not a race, incremental improvement every day of strength, flexibility and endurance WILL get you where you want to go.  Shortcuts won't.

Great answers both of you. Thanks a million. Will focus on that iM then so I can master the entire level.  ;)

Also just wanted to point out that there is value working the PE even though you have it "mastered". Your strength will continue to improve as you neurologically advance with the movement - form gets even better, movement gets crisper, unnecessary tension levels are diminished. Also, if the associated iM is opening up new ROM for that PE then you will need to master that new range too.

Ok so this is the same question that first started this thread however it is the opposite way around.  If you have mastered the iM but not yet the PE should you move to the next iM since the current iM may not be doing much in the way of mobility due to the ease at which it is performed.  Or should you just move deeper into the iM movement to try and find more restrictions if any within the iM exercise?  Cheers!

Same same, the course instructions are very clear: both the PE/SE and the paired iM must be mastered in order to progress :)

No dramas. I thought that might be the case, just wanted to make sure. On a side note this stuff is challenging! I'm not great at gymnastics but can front lever on rings, back lever, l-sit to handstand on parrallettes planche push-up etc - however even the beginning levels I'm finding extremely challenging and I'm talking even the very beginning levels! Loving the info and support, and enjoying starting all over to refine technique and strength. Thanks again!
