StevenL
I was watching youtube footage today and wondered, why is the handstand in modern gymnastics competition completely straight, while just a few decades ago it was arched? is there a particular reason, like the judges' tastes or something? i'm not knocking it, and i practice it both ways, but it's just something i was wondering about. Nrxszvo
Not sure if this is the difinitive answer, but I know I read about it a while back on beastskills.com so I thought I might aswell quote from there!"Gymnasts back in the day held handstands with this significant curve in their backs. For this reason, I'll call this the "old" style handstand. As gymnastics changed, the handstand was straightened out for both aesthetic and technical reasons. The modern form allows harder, more complicated gymnastic skills to be performed."Hope this helps ^^Peace and Love,Mike
Blairbob
Pretty much aesthetics and the amount of hours gymnasts have come to practice since the old days. More skill training, more refinement.
