Neck Strength for Grappling and Jiu-Jitsu

Hi guys,

I have a few ideas on how I should address this issue, but I wanted to begin by seeing what you all think (since I have cleared up my back, upper back and neck issues in the past thanks to this protocol and forum).

In jiu-jitsu, there are various submission holds and positions that place tremendous amounts of pressure on your neck by forcing it various directions. One submission, for example, is a guillotine choke that forces the chin down and over stretches the neck muscles and upper back while choking you. Various positions both lead and encourage head position mis-alignment in order to manipulate your opponent as well. Situations like these have lead to various neck issues for me, thankfully no disc herniations but difficulty turning and tilting my head without discomfort and forcing me to take time off.

This is a combat sport, so pain due to lack of technique does come with the territory until techniques is improved. This being said, I would like to find a way to strengthen my neck to help pre-hab and stave off future injuries. Are there any protocols for the neck specifically that you all recommend or are a part of GST?

Thanks in advance,

Miguel

HI MIguel, aside handstand work there is nothing specific on GST.

the protocol is usually scheduled in the function of the specific skill. Also, you should be able to show first the full range of motion on the neck, i mean the extension, flexion, side flexion and rotation. then you can apply for strength work.

Personally, i think that you should train with a personal trainer that can see the directions and angles where you need strength and stability. Personally, I do not know anything about jujitsu technical movements.
